The Lost Daughter is the feature directorial and screenwriting debut of actor Maggie Gyllenhaal. And what a first effort it is. Based in a slim novel by Italian author Elena Ferrante, the film is structured as a psychological drama with overtones of a thriller, but it doesn’t bend to the expectations of those genres, functioning instead as a meditation on memory, motherhood and grief, all filtered through a superb, complex performance–as if we would expect less–from the great Olivia Colman....

When Star Wars: Squadrons releases on October 2nd, the developers have promised Hotas flight stick support on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 5. Not only that, but the game will also have full VR support. Squadrons will undoubtedly be an incredibly immersive experience, but for those who haven’t already invested into the flight-sim hobby, buying and setting up a flight stick can be pretty overwhelming. Hotas, or hands on throttle and stick, are the best controllers for serious sims like Microsoft Flight Simulator, but they can also be a lot of fun for arcade action games like Star Wars: Squadrons too....
Electronic Arts releases a new trailer for Star Wars Battlefront that details content coming in the game’s free updates, including a new mode starring Jabba the Hutt. Those still playing Star Wars Battlefront have been enjoying a steady stream of free content updates since the game’s release last November. EA has now started teasing what future free updates for Star Wars Battlefront will entail, with a trailer that features Tatooine’s most dangerous crime boss....
In the new Star Wars novel The High Republic: Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule, a starship has broken up in hyperspace, an accident that wasn’t supposed to be able to happen. The Jedi of the High Republic era (set 200 years before The Phantom Menace), noble, strong, and united by the battle meditation of Avar Kriss, go to the scene of the accident to rescue survivors and prevent the debris from destroying a planetary system....
Starfield is Bethesda’s next RPG project, set for release before The Elder Scrolls 6 on the next-gen consoles. Despite the size of the project, Bethesda fans have only had a few potentially leaked screenshots to extrapolate from and what little the studio has revealed about the upcoming game so far. Starfield will be a single player space-set sci-fi RPG, which led many RPG fans to compare it to BioWare’s Mass Effect series when it was announced....
Capcom finally released a trailer for Street Fighter 6, giving us our first real look at what the game looks like, what features we can expect, and which fighters are in the starting roster. Only four characters were officially revealed in the footage: Ryu, Chun-Li, Luke, and Jamie. Getting a new Mario game, even one ported from a previous generation, always feels like opening a present on Christmas morning. Nintendo obviously knows this, having gone so far as to include the never-before-seen Bowser’s Fury expansion as a bonus for players already familiar with the wonders of Super Mario 3D World. And while this new side experiment may not quite be enough to encourage returning players to undertake a second playthrough, newcomers finally have the chance to play one of the most underappreciated Super Mario gems on Nintendo Switch....
Dragon Ball without transformations is like Dragon Ball without martial arts, or Dragon Ball without Ki attacks, or Dragon Ball without Vegeta angrily declaring himself stronger than Goku only to get pulverized into the ground. The point is that transformations are a key part of Dragon Ball and serve an important role within the story. Giving a character a new transformation is a clean and quick way of demonstrating growth. Goku turning Super Saiyan at the end of the Frieza saga tells us he’s finally accepted his Saiyan heritage, and Gohan turning Super Saiyan 2 during the Cell Games cements him as the new protagonist for the time being....
The South by Southwest (SXSW) film festival, usually held every year in Austin, Texas, is moving online for 2021. This year, its official Opening Night Headliner is planned to be Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil, a YouTube Original documentary about the circumstances that surrounded Lovato’s near-fatal oxycodone overdose in 2018. Lovato calls the period of time leading up to her overdose the “darkest point in [her] life.” The “docuseries” is intended to provide a window into Lovato’s life as she struggled with her sobriety, due to problems that included bulimia, conflicts with her management team, and abandonment issues....

TSM is one of the biggest names in esports, and it’s only fitting that they’d get one of the biggest gaming centers in all of esports. They’re making a huge facility in California to the tune of $50 million, and we get a sneak peek of what it’ll look like in TSM’s latest video. You wouldn’t have thought a humble GameCube would be capable of this, would you? That’s because it isn’t. Mass Effect is the game series that puts the player in the shoes of Commander Shepard, the first-ever human Spectre. Through a long career, the Commander becomes a hero on par with Master Chief and Luke Skywalker as they face terrifying foes and overcome incredible odds to protect the peace in the galaxy.
