After much speculation and more than a few false rumors, we finally know that Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will portray Joel and Ellie in HBO’s The Last of Us series. That announcement brings us one step closer to the debut of what is the most exciting video game adaptation in production at the moment. As is usually the case when these casting announcements are made, there are some fans who remain unconvinced that these are the right choices for two of gaming’s most iconic characters....

Last Wednesday, during Sony’s State of Play, The Last of Us 2 was featured heavily, including a 20 minute gameplay demo for fans to sink their teeth in. While this is a game that generally takes itself very seriously, an unexpected cameo made its way into the gameplay, the PlayStation Vita. The PlayStation Vita was the successor of the PlayStation Portable, but never really caught on the same way. Given that The Last of Us 2 takes place decades in the future, it is rather bizarre to see one in the gameplay, but it appears nonetheless....

Yara is a fascinating character, and she’s best known for being the sister of Lev, who was one of the major characters in The Last of Us Part II. Although Lev had more interactions with Abby and other characters in the game, Yara also had her fair share of scenes that shined the spotlight on her. I didn’t do a whole lot this year. I mean, sure, I worked (obviously), but I didn’t really get through my backlog of games like I’d intended. Titanfall 2 remains purchased and unplayed. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are getting their own pinball game. Featuring custom artwork, Stern Pinball in conjunction with Nickelodeon has created a masterpiece featuring the fan-favorite characters. Stern has announced it is releasing three versions. The starting Pro machine will start at $6099, while Premium is $7699, and the Limited Edition of the machine will be $9099. Production of the Limited Edition will be restricted to only 500. TMNT fans who manage to get their hands on one of the Limited Edition machines will receive a certificate of authenticity, hand-drawn artwork autographed by Ghostbusters artist Zombie Yeti, and a collectible toy signed by Gary Stern among other things....

The final frontier is getting fun. A new full-length trailer for the upcoming series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has dropped, and the name of the game is classic, lighthearted space adventure with phasers a-blasting. For Trekkies who have craved a retro approach — but with great production values and VFX — Strange New Worlds seems to be the most fan-service oriented Star Trek project in a very long time. It’s not quite Galaxy Quest as actual Star Trek, but it feels close, in a good way....

With the success of the Nintendo Switch, fans felt it was only a matter of time before Super Mario Maker was ported over from the Wii U. It came as a surprise when Nintendo announced a sequel to the game instead of porting over the seemingly endless Mario experience. Looks like some good news for those fans who backed the System Shock reboot on Kickstarter. In an update, Nightdive Studios have confirmed that fans will be able to preorder the horror game, as well as get their hands on the final demo, in just a few short weeks! The preorder and demo will become simultaneously available allowing fans to test the game out fully before placing their order! It’s been a busy week in Kickstarter land for tabletop games. This follows the news that while overall projects are down, funding for board games increased dramatically. First up is an interesting take on the RPG genre that sees the group of adventurers seeking out monsters to look after them, rather than kill them. Monster Care Squad RPG is over 4x funded with 23 days to go. The game takes place in a ghibli inspired universe and the concept-art that has been shown so far looks amazing....

If it weren’t for the aid of signature moves, the Z-fighters would have found themselves in inhospitable circumstances. It’s not surprising, then, that these first two episodes function a bit more like a two-part premiere and they feel more satisfying after the conclusion of the second than they do at the end of the first, which is more of a taste than an opening story....

Open-world games thrive on variety, interesting gameplay, and a compelling story, but interestingly enough, it’s easy to see that it isn’t always the case from a development standpoint. For example, Rockstar is renowned for its open-world games, but these titles are primarily Red Dead or GTA. In other words, to make really good open-world games, it oftentimes takes so much time that they are more specialized than some might think....
