It may seem quaint by today’s standards, but the 1993 adventure game Myst was fairly groundbreaking upon its release. Notable for necessitating a CD-ROM drive and ushering in a new era of expanded media, the title was the brainchild of brothers Robyn and Rand Miller that redefined what was possible for “indie” developers. That term hadn’t really come to fruition yet (basically every studio was indie back then), but Myst blew the door wide open for the possibilities of game development....

Fans of the Tomb Raider franchise could get a new game to feast their eyes on as soon as this year’s E3 event, according to a new report. The Tomb Raider franchise is always a big pull for gamers and it’s now been said that the Crystal Dynamics will premiere in 2023, with the company even going so far as to tell investors that it’ll happen. The move comes as Chrystal Dynamics winds down the Marvel’s Avengers game, with GameRanx noting that the timing couldn’t be any better....

During the recent Star Trek Day event celebrating that iconic franchise, it was announced that the mobile game Star Trek Fleet Command is getting its latest update Patch 22. The update introduces the Star Trek Discovery arc, adding new content based on the hit show at CBS All Access, as well as adding the USS Discovery NCC 1031 and new Discovery officers, missions, and storylines. The new Discovery arc will be Fleet Command’s first venture beyond the Kelvin timeline established in the 2009 Star Trek reboot....

Retro and classic video game streaming platform Anstream Arcade recently announced that it has struck a deal to bring a series of Star Wars games to its playing audience. As of January 21, Anstream Arcade gamers will be able to play Super Star Wars, Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, and Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi through its game streaming service. According to the press release, this is the first time all three of these Star Wars games have been available on a single platform....

Despite all the making-of books and documentaries, and the myth-making surrounding the creator of Star Wars, there’s no way George Lucas could have predicted the long-lasting effects his 1977 space adventure would have on pop culture. Releasing twelve years after the original game in the series, StarCraft 2 became an overnight success for Blizzard as the title achieved both critical and commercial success. The first installment known as Wings of Liberty, which focused on the Terran race, went on to become the fastest selling real-time strategy game of all time with over three million copies sold in the first month alone. Surprisingly, it would take Blizzard another three years to release the second installment, Heart of the Swarm, leading fans to worry that the third and final installment, set to focus on the Protoss race, would take a similar amount of time to release....

Bethesda intrigued fans in 2018 when it teased Starfield, its upcoming action role-playing game set in space. But while excitement for the new IP grows, Bethesda Vice President Pete Hines seems to have confirmed that no new details will be released on the game until next year. Bethesda has a pedigree for its expansive action role-playing games such as the Fallout and Elders Scrolls series. When the developer teased Starfield at E3 2018 – its first new IP in more than two decades – fans hoped that they might get to play the game by the end of 2020....

The last few weeks have been a rough ride for Twitch streamers. First, the platform removed the VODS of hundreds of partnered streamers after hitting them with DMCA takedowns. Then, after offering little to no information to those affected, they decided to ignore the situation for a while. Finally, around three weeks later, they issued a statement. According to Twitch, the move related to an influx of DMCA notifications coming in from major record labels, mostly targeting archived footage....

Many expected Capcom to be moving on from Street Fighter 5 and begin work on Street Fighter 6 for the next generation of consoles. Street Fighter 5 Champion Edition is very much the definitive version of the game but, while it’s unlikely that Capcom will release another iteration, it turns out that support for it is far from over. Back in May, Capcom announced that it would be releasing one final season of content for Street Fighter 5, with the only details being five new characters and three new stages....

Super Mario 64 is full of diverse worlds, but Dire Dire Docks greatly stands out by having the game’s only mandatory level, as players have to complete its first mission to progress to the second Bowser stage. If that wasn’t odd enough, this small industrial port is far more small and compact than nearly any level in the game, including its swimming level peers Jolly Roger Bay and Wet-Dry World....

Five and a half months after Super Mario Party first launched on the Nintendo Switch, the game finally received its first patch. However, the only thing version 1.0.1 brought was disappointment, fans have claimed. According to the patch note (yes, it is one singular note), the update only fixed an issue with how ranking data was displayed in Online Mariothon mode. Fallout 76’s new battle royale mode is an absolutely gorgeous mess. Mashing together Fallout’s quirky setting with the trendy ’last man standing’ multiplayer format and then sprinkling some of that good, old fashioned “it just works” Bethesda magic over the top has produced what is perhaps the most gloriously ungainly title to brave the genre. It’s everything you’d expect: Buggy, chaotic, and absurd in the most delightful way. However, those very elements can make it a bit overwhelming when it comes to getting serious and grinding out those Overseer ranks....

Microsoft may have confirmed when its next-generation consoles, the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S, will be released, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy to acquire one. There’s even a date for when pre-orders for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S will start, but that’s still going to change on a retailer by retailer basis. Except now retailers are starting to confirm their Xbox pre-order plans, too, with Target being the latest example....

Since its release three years ago in 2017, Destiny 2 has continued to evolve first through subtle updates and expansions to more foundational changes. Many would argue that the real push for change began in 2019 when Bungie and Activision essentially divorced, giving the former full control of Destiny 2 development and publishing. From there, Bungie released its first solo expansion in Shadowkeep, enabled cross-play, and brought the PC version to Steam....

Sports games are often looked down upon by the gaming community. EA and 2K, for example, are frequently criticized for only implementing minimal improvements to their yearly Fifa and NBA games.
