Marvel film fans should be used to unexpected cameos from one of the comic industry’s biggest names - Stan Lee. The iconic writer/creator of numerous Marvel properties - including Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Thor - has appeared in a number of the studio’s film properties as everything from a local pick-up truck driver to a Hugh Hefner look-alike.
That said, one place comic fans probably didn’t expect Stan Lee to pop-up? As a playable character in the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man tie-in game.
The report comes from Addict of Fiction, who stumbled on some exclusive news when Stan Lee enthusiastically replied to a question about Marvel vs. Capcom 3 by asserting that he will be featured in the upcoming Spider-Man movie game as a playable character.
Check out the full confirmation from the man himself below:
As surprising as the news might be on principle alone, web slinging through the streets of New York as the the 89 year old man, it’s not entirely out of left-field since Lee has a working relationship with developer Beenox - having done narration work in 2010’s Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions.
Plus, while Lee does have a full-on cameo in the upcoming Spider-Man film (click the link if you want to be spoiled), his role in The Amazing Spider-Man video game probably required even less “acting” or physical body work - since it’s probable that his likeness will merely be an unlockable “skin” for the webslinger (Beenox has included plenty of fan-favorite unlockable skins in prior Spider-Man titles). Whether or not Lee will be featured as his cameo role in the film or in his real-life street clothes shouldn’t make too much of a difference to fans who can’t wait to fight the Rhino as Marvel’s front man.
As for Addict of Fiction’s original question: has Stan Lee ever played Marvel vs. Capcom? The answer was, sadly, a shake of the head, no - followed-up with “Believe it or not, I don’t play video games.” A crippling blow - since the image of Stan Lee huddled over a Marvel vs. Capcom 3 cabinet, talking trash and pulling 100-hit hyper combos at a Tokyo game center definitely brings a smile to the face.
The Amazing Spider-Man releases June 26, 2012, for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, 3DS and DS.
