Cloud Imperium Games has revealed an impressive cast list for Star Citizen, containing the likes of Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, and Gillian Anderson.
Star Citizen is a game which casts a large shadow - it’s the biggest crowdfunded videogame of all time, and the developer is striving to keep momentum going for what has become an evidently arduous development cycle. To build up excitement as progress inches forward, Cloud Imperium Games has just hosted a convention for fans of the game called CitizenCon, which helped deliver plenty of fresh Star Citizen news to the masses.
The Altrincham, England-based convention was held in the Manchester Airport, and it featured plenty of the game’s developers showing off new progress milestones for the upcoming alpha update. Overshadowing every other gameplay reveal, however, was the revelation of 16 new cast members who will all partake in the game’s single player campaign, most notably among them being Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, and Mark Hamill.
The 16 newly announced cast members offer an impressive amount of industry experience and stardom between them all, though there’s little doubt the headline actor is Gary Oldman. Mostly known for his role as Commissioner Gordon in the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy, the English actor has previously been nominated for one Oscar, and has earned 24 other wins and 39 nominations in his illustrious acting career. He’ll be taking on the role of Admiral Ernest Bishop of Squadron 42, and so far he’s the only character from the squadron to have his role revealed.
The rest of the extensive cast list can be seen below, and should certainly impress any skeptics:
- Gillian Anderson (The X-Files) Mark Hamill (Star Wars) Mark Strong (Sherlocke Holmes) Sophie Wu (Kick-Ass) Sandi Gardiner (Around The Verse) Craig Fairbrass (The EastEnders) Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones) Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones) Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises) Ian Duncan (Creep) Jack Huston (American Hustle) John Rhys-Davies (Lord of the Rings) Rhona Mitra (Underworld) Andy Serkis (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) Harry Treadaway (Penny Dreadful)
Squadron 42 is the single player campaign portion of Star Citizen, which is set to bring episodic content to those who wish to explore a more linear storyline in the game. Players will be able to play the content whilst offline, with the rest of the game supplying its entertainment via online multiplayer. Though not much has been revealed about the campaign mode itself, Squadron 42 - of which all the cast members will be enlisted officers in the game – is reportedly a volunteer division of the United Empire of Earth Navy, in which volunteers can get citizenship for serving time. Think of it like Starship Troopers, but with a more space-based combat and a bigger cast (sorry, Casper Van Dien!)
Despite being able to obtain the likes of Luke Skywalker and Agent Scully, not everything about the development of Star Citizen has been going smoothly. The title has been offering refunds to concerned backers, and lost its executive producer due to personal reasons. The outlook at the Star Citizen convention this weekend has been very positive, and the developers were keen to focus on the progress they’ve made for the Alpha 2.0 Release, rather than the speed at which it has come.
What do you think about the cast list, Ranters? Is there anyone else you think would fit in?
Star Citizen is expected to release for PC in 2016.
