In celebration of the second annual Ship Showdown, the multiplayer space trading and combat simulator Star Citizen is kicking off a special Free Fly event that will give everybody the opportunity to participate in the contest.
Phase 1 of the Ship Showdown has now ended, and the community has voted for the top 16 ships in Star Citizen. Now it’s time to select a winner in a bracket-style competition. For the next two weeks, the Free Fly event will give all players, newcomers included, the chance to test pilot the winning ships and decide upon a champion.
From September 9 through September 23, using the code SHOWDOWN2950 will grant free access to Star Citizen Alpha 3.10 and all 16 ships from the Fly Free event. During this time, players will also be able to try out dogfighting in Arena Commander, experience the FPS mayhem of Star Marine’s ground combat, and there will also be special discounts on starter ship packs.
To participate in the event, Star Citizen’s developers won’t require new players to make any purchase. They can simply create an account on the official Star Citizen website, enter the Ship Showdown Free Fly event code, and download the game client.
Star Citizen, which has been in development since 2011, currently boasts over 2.7 million registered accounts and has recently reached the impressive milestone of raising over $300 million through crowdfunding. The space simulator regularly offers free-to-play periods so that non-backers can try their hand at the most crowdfunded video game of all time.
Star Citizen is in development for PC.
