Within the Disney continuity, the Star Wars franchise has had quite the revival. With the dawn of the sequel trilogy and shows like The Mandalorian getting more popular, there is no stopping Star Wars from bringing out more content. However, when it comes to the lore of Legends continuity, there is still a lot that has not been touched by the canon projects. One of the most popular video game characters in the franchise is Kyle Katarn, one of the many losses to the Star Wars continuity when Disney redefined what is considered canon.
What facts about Kyle Katarn should everyone know?
10 Kyle Katarn Is A Legends Character
Kyle Katarn is one of the most interesting characters to come out of Legends continuity. Being involved throughout the era of the original trilogy, Katarn’s journey saw him go from a mercenary to a Jedi master. His sarcastic personality and overall cool demeanor helped make him beloved across all media types.
That being said, Katarn is sadly not present within the canon universe. However, elements of his character might have been added to characters in canon like Kanan Jarrus, at least judging from his design. As canon stories continue to borrow some elements of Legends like Thrawn, it could be only a matter of time before Katarn makes the jump.
9 His Design Seems To Be A Mixture Between Luke And Han Solo
When it comes to the design of Kyle Katarn, he was meant to act as a mixture between Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. Proof of this can be seen with his humble beginnings as he was the son of the farmer Morgan Katarn.
However, Katarn’s personality and later life are more similar to Han Solo than Luke Skywalker. Eventually, however, Katarn grew into his own character.
8 He Is Primarily A Self-Taught Jedi
Similar to Luke Skywalker, who had his training more through experience than proper formal training, Kyle Katarn also went down this route. Originally trained in utilizing a vast variety of weapons within the Imperial Academy, he used those skills to improve his lightsaber skills.
As for his Force abilities, due to gameplay, it seems Katarn just learns them naturally on the fly. It is only much later when Katarn is trained by Luke that he becomes far more powerful.
7 He Is The One Responsible For Stealing The Death Star Plans
When movie-watchers or canon fans watch Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, they should know that the Death Star plans were taken by a small group of heroes who all sacrificed their lives to bring the plans to the Rebellion.
However, Kyle Katarn was actually the one who ended up stealing the plans in the Legends continuity. Not only did he steal them but he also came back to tell the tale.
6 He Has Used Three Different Lightsabers Total
Throughout the character’s time in gaming, Kyle Katarn has used a multitude of different lightsabers. He first used a green-bladed lightsaber that was created by Jedi Master Qu Rahn.
Katarn then used a yellow lightsaber that was created by Dark Jedi Yun. Eventually, he crafted his very own blue lightsaber, which he would go on to use for the rest of his career.
5 He Was Able To Hold His Own Against Jacen Solo
Late into Legends continuity, Kyle Katarn had trained a vast variety of new Jedi. His skills had practically become legendary by this point and he could contend with some of the best in the Jedi order.
Katarn’s prowess was so strong that he was able to fight against Jacen Solo for a decent amount of time. Jacen Solo is the grandson of Darth Vader and the Legends counterpart to Ben Solo.
4 He Stopped The Dark Trooper Project And Defeated Multiple Dark Jedi
Kyle Katarn has fought against plenty of enemies in the past, ranging from stormtroopers to different types of Dark Jedi within his games. Not only that but he has also stopped the Dark Trooper Project, which sought to craft an even deadlier form of battle droids that somewhat resembled stormtroopers. Katarn was the key figure responsible for sabotaging this operation.
This makes Katarn one of the most versatile and experienced characters in all of Star Wars.
3 He Trained Mara Jade And Jaden Korr
During his time as a growing Jedi, Kyle Katarn trained Mara Jade, the former Emperor’s hand. He helped train her in the ways of the Jedi during the events of Star Wars: Jedi Knight Mysteries Of The Sith.
Mara Jade went on to become a powerful Jedi in her own right and wife of Luke Skywalker. Later on, Kyle Katarn also trained Jaden Korr, the protagonist of Jedi Academy.
2 He Utilizes A Mixture Of The Light And Dark Side Of The Force
Kyle Katarn’s most powerful abilities rely on the Force. However, it isn’t necessarily the Force itself that makes it powerful, but rather how the character uses it. Because of his brushes between both sides of the Force, the character is able to effortlessly use both sides with absolute ease. As he believed it isn’t the side, but how you use it.
As a result, Katarn’s skills with different weapons are absolutely terrifying to go up against; furthermore, his creative uses of different Force abilities can fit most situations. Consequently, Katarn is one of the most impactful and dangerous Force users in the entire New Jedi Order.
1 He Is The Jedi Battlemaster
A title that truly befits his name, Kyle Katarn later became the Jedi Battlemaster of Luke’s order. Battlemasters are typically teachers who oversee all of the lightsaber training across generations of future Jedi. With that in mind, Kyle Katarn had to naturally be very proficient.
From Jedi Outcast onwards, Kyle Katarn has seemingly mastered the lightsaber styles of the New Jedi Order. However, as a Battlemaster, Katarn also employs many of the forms of the old order. All of this allows him to be incredibly versatile as a duelist.
