Before the game was even officially announced, EA confirmed that Star Wars Battlefront 2 would tie-in with the newer Star Wars movies. Now, it is making good on that promise in a big way, having announced a whole season of content based on the latest film.
EA has announced The Last Jedi season for Star Wars Battlefront 2. Coinciding with the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi on December 15th, this season of content will also be released during the month of December.
The season begins on December 5th as Star Wars Battlefront 2 players will be encouraged to “choose a side,” picking between the First Order or the Resistance. Not dissimilar to Splatoon 2’s Splatfests or Destiny 2’s Faction Rally events, Battlefront 2 players will “take part in special challenges that will grant your faction specific rewards.”
Then, on December 13th, Finn (Resistance) and Captain Phasma (First Order) will be added to the game. Whichever faction completes the most challenges will unlock “a special Crate of high-power upgrades for Finn or Captain Phasma.” Moreover, the Starfighter Assault map D’Qar will be introduced along with Tallie Lintra’s RZ-2 A-wing and a Last Jedi-inspired ability for Poe Dameron’s T-70 X-wing.
And finally, on December 13th, players will also gain access to the “Resurrection” missions. These are several single player story chapters that follow protagonist Iden Versio as the First Order rises to power. The development team had already promised that the single-player campaign isn’t an afterthought and the decision to release story DLC seems to be part of that.
In its announcement post, EA also stresses that all of this new content is free to anybody who owns Star Wars Battlefront 2. For those who find traditional season passes too expensive or have been disappointed by them in the past, this will be good news.
However, the decision to ditch paid-for DLC is likely why Star Wars Battlefront 2 has loot boxes. In the absence of a traditional season pass, EA and the developers had to find some way to support the development of post-launch content. Some fans have rallied against the companies and the game because of its “pay to win” microtransactions, but may change their minds now knowing what free content’s in store.
At this point it’s unclear what EA and DICE are planning beyond The Last Jedi season. Though, the Star Wars universe is so large that there are plenty of places it could go, so watch this space for more official announcements.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 is set to launch on November 17th for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
