A 30-second Star Wars Battlefront 2 commercial has leaked online ahead of the game’s scheduled debut on April 15. The commercial is full of revelations, including characters to be featured in Battlefront 2, settings to be used as maps, pre-order DLC content, and what appears to be a single-player campaign based on Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The commercial is likely part of a marketing campaign to run in tandem with the April 15 debut.
Single Player Campaign
Let’s start with the focus of the trailer, which appears to be a single-player campaign or story set during Star Wars: the Force Awakens. The trailer opens to the second Death Star exploding at the end of Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi, with the protagonist watching on Endor. She appears to be part of a special stormtrooper squad, perhaps shadow stormtroopers, though the red stripes are unique. It’s also worth mentioning that her squad appears to be all women.
It’s clear the unnamed stormtrooper survives the Battle of Endor, going on to join the First Order from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Or perhaps simply pursuing vengeance for the Emperor prior to the First Order’s creation.
The text in the trailer reads “The Untold Soldier’s Story,” so Battlefront 2 will likely offer a unique perspective of the major events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. EA DICE could tell an original story tying Episode 6 to Episode 7, but that doesn’t fall in line with the set-piece gameplay from Battlefront.
Multiplayer
While the focus of the trailer is definitely introducing the idea of single-player, or at least story, to Battlefront, there’s a good bit of focus on multiplayer too – albeit in cinematic form. The trailer shows battle sequences from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, including the Battle at Takodana. And the icing on the cake is Battlefront 2 promising battles from different eras, showing a duel between Darth Maul and Yoda.
Other interesting details from the Star Wars Battlefront 2 trailer include pre-order bonuses, that unlock heroes from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Also, the commercial is wrapped in PlayStation 4 advertising, which could imply some sort of deal in place with Sony. That’s especially interesting, because there were rumors Microsoft was working to arrange a way to show Battlefront 2 footage with the Scorpio.
Star Wars: Battlefront 2 is tentatively planned for release later this year on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Stay tuned for the official unveiling of the game on April 15.
