One of the main reasons fans of the largest science-fiction franchise in the world are so excited for Star Wars Battlefront is that the game provides the opportunity to recreate the most epic battles from the films, utilizing the iconic Star Wars weaponry and vehicles in the best-looking Star Wars game to date.
While Star Wars Battlefront will certainly allow players to re-live numerous epic battles across a variety of planets in the Star Wars universe, one of the most recognizable locations from the movies will not be in Battlefront. Unfortunately, the planet-destroying Death Star will not be the setting of a multiplayer map in 2015’s Battlefront reboot.
This news came from Reddit, as EA’s community manager hosted an AMA about the game, and received a question asking about the possibility of a Death Star multiplayer map. They responded with, “We do not offer maps in space or space battles.” The question was then clarified, asking whether or not an interior map set inside the Death Star was being considered, but EA shot down the idea, stating, “We will not offer a Death Star based map.”
So, what locations will be featured in Star Wars Battlefront? Well, we know that Star Wars Battlefront will launch with a total of 12 multiplayer maps, and so far DICE has revealed three that the game will launch with, and one that will be released a bit later on as DLC.
Hoth was the very first map revealed for Star Wars Battlefront, and it is set during the exciting battle that opened The Empire Strikes Back film. The second map confirmed is set during the Empire’s attack on Endor from Return of the Jedi. Finally, the third map is based on an entirely new location created by DICE, taking place on the volcanic planet of Sullust.
As stated previously, a DLC map is also being prepped for the game. The DLC map will be absolutely free to everyone that owns Star Wars Battlefront on December 8th, but those that pre-order the game will have access to it a week earlier, on December 1st. The map in question is called “The Battle of Jakku”, and it is based on the desert planet seen in the early trailers for the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens film. The purpose of the map is to bridge the narrative gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, which releases in theaters a couple of weeks after the map itself drops.
In the meantime, those hoping to try out Star Wars Battlefront before its release date have a couple of opportunities to do so. They can try to get in the Star Wars Battlefront PC closed alpha, or they will be able to try the game on a trial basis before launch through the EA Access program on Xbox One.
Star Wars Battlefront will be available on November 17th on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
