Star Wars Episode 1: Racer’s re-release is part of a somewhat resurgence of classic Star Wars games being brought to current gen consoles. During EA’s initial push of its first Star Wars: Battlefront, a select amount of classic games were announced as part of a pre-order bonus on the PS4. Those games included Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter and Super Star Wars. Last year it was announced that Star Wars: Jedi Outcast and Star Wars: Jedi Academy would also be re-released for consoles, with Jedi Academy being released this past March.
Star Wars Episode 1: Racer was released alongside The first prequel movie of the series, Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. The game quickly became a fan favorite with it’s emphasis on speed and recreating the intensity of the classic scene from the film. The game was popular enough to see a sequel on follow up consoles, though Star Wars: Racer Revenge wasn’t as well received and recently Respawn revealed it had considered its own follow up. Having being released 2 decades ago Aspyr seeks to modernize the controls to be comparable to current gen games. This, along with a slew of other improvements including the frame-rate, should help with the nostalgia kick the game will likely receive.
Star Wars is on the verge of a new era approaching with new movies on the horizon focusing on a new timeline well before the prequels. Along with new books only a few months away, a new series of comics and EA announcing its latest efforts in Star Wars: Squadrons, It’s good to see an appreciation of its past through video games with their resurgence.
