At one point, many fans believed they would only be able to play Star Wars Episode I: Racer on a classic video game console of old in a living room far far away. However, the fan-favorite Star Wars racing game was announced by Aspyr recently and is on its way soon. But PlayStation 4 players will have to wait a bit longer.
Star Wars Episode I: Racer was set to be released on both the Nintendo Switch and the PS4 on May 12. Aspry took to Twitter, however, to let fans know that the PS4 version of the game will be delayed until May 26, with the Switch version still being released as planned on May 12.
There is no information as to why the PS4 version was delayed, and it wouldn’t be fair to make assumptions. The fact that the games will be released about two weeks apart is certainly encouraging, as PS4 players won’t have to wait an excessive time for their version.
Star Wars Episode 1: Racer is a beloved classic Star Wars game from 1999. It was released on the N64, PC, Dreamcast, and even Gameboy Color. In many ways, the game was ahead of its time. It had a rather detailed progression system, allowing players to upgrade their podracer over time. It was also brutally hard. There were many characters and podracers to choose from, and endless maps to race through. There is a lot to love about the podracing game, which is why it tops the list of best racing games of all time for some.
Aspyr recently revealed that it is working on multiple classic Star Wars games. Star Wars Episode 1: Racer is just the latest, as Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy was released earlier in the year. Jedi Academy is an online multiplayer game from 2003, and the remake still retains the fun lightsaber battles from almost two decades ago.
Star Wars games have often been hit or miss. But with the recent Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order reviewing very well, and with some of the old-school classics being re-released, fans of the world-famous phenomenon may be able to rest easy knowing that there are fun Star Wars games available.
Aspyr could continue to re-release more classic Star Wars titles, which fans would probably appreciate. But there’s also an unearthed project named Star Wars Project Maverick that could be next on the docket. The rumored title may have multiplayer action and could come out on next-gen consoles. Fans have been let down before with games that were much further along in development, however, as Star Wars 1313 is still the most infamous example of a game that was canceled after so much excitement. For now, the Star Wars games that are available will have to do.
Star Wars Episode 1: Racer releases on May 12th and Switch and May 26th for PS4.
