Star Wars: Squadrons allows players to live out their fantasy as a Galactic Empire or New Republic pilot fighting in their galactic war. It came out in October of 2020 and has been popular ever since, with positive, praising reviews on sites like Steam and The Verge. Though it can be played without, many fans are obsessed with the game for its VR capabilities.
Star Wars: Squadrons allows players to choose from a myriad of customization options for their New Republic and Empire ships. The playable character can be customized, including the ship’s paint color, any gear worn in or out of the ship, the decorations that pilots use to personalize the inside of their vessel, and more. These are the 10 best customizations to be found in the game.
10 Starbird Squadron Paint Job
This sleek orange paint job for your rebel ship is one of General Syndulla’s new designs – fans may remember the General by her first name, Hera, from when she appeared in the animated show Star Wars: Rebels.
Supposedly, General Syndulla was inspired by Sabine Wren (another character seen in Star Wars: Rebels) and her art when creating the paint job. Sabine Wren’s name has been on the lips of many fans these days, as folks begin to speculate that she will appear in the upcoming Ahsoka television show.
9 Allegiance Helmet
The Allegiance Helmet is an Epic level cosmetic item that is given to Imperial pilots who prove their “absolute loyalty to Emperor Palpatine.” There’s a full set of red armor to match and even a paint job, too!
It feels like a familiar little callback to the red soldiers that fans will remember seeing at Palpatine’s side in the original trilogy. They were unforgettable by their stark, clean red robes as contrasted by the dark black and metallic surroundings.
8 Volcanic Paint Job
If you equip the Volcanic paint job in Star Wars: Squadrons, it indicates that your ship was “forged in the fires of Mustafar.” If the name sounds familiar, it’s because that’s the planet where Obi-Wan and Anakin have their final battle of the prequels.
Its various bases and inhabitable areas had to be protected by fierce forcefields which kept the lava at bay. There’s a kind of otherwise-unobtainable confidence that comes from knowing your ship was forged in the same place that Darth Vader was born.
7 Protocol Droid For Dashboard
The Protocol Droid is another beloved staple of the Star Wars franchise that you can mortifyingly put on display in your Imperial dashboard. It’s clearly not C3P0 up there on your wall, but there’s no harm in pretending that it is.
It doesn’t have the same effect as an animal head hung from your wall, meant to show off your incredible strength because you were able to kill such a beast. Perhaps it’s worse, though, to think that you savagely murdered an innocent, completely harmless Protocol Droid and hung its head to remember the moment by.
6 Natural Instinct Helmet
The Natural Instinct helmet should be familiar to most (if not all) Star Wars fans. Back in A New Hope, Obi-Wan had Luke fight a training droid while wearing a helmet just like this one, with the face blinder.
While it was probably helpful for isolated combat training, we don’t know about sending pilots into the field wearing this one. The Force isn’t sonar, after all! Even if you could sense some of the ships or shots coming towards you, you’d be bound to miss something.
5 Death Star 2 Hologram
Star Wars: Squadrons includes a hologram of the second Death Star that can appear beside an Imperial pilot. It says that we must never forget “what was lost” – clearly, the Empire isn’t over the events on Endor.
This depiction is a classic in the franchise and an epic thing to have beside you when taking on rebel scum. That is, of course, if you can ignore all the things about it that made absolutely no sense at all. Nobody will blame you if you find this hologram too distracting when you’re trying to fight.
4 Balanced Victory Pose
This one is a simple cosmetic unlock, not worth a lot, but fun nonetheless. This “Balanced” victory pose, in which they balance their helmet on their first and second fingers, is just awesome. Are they a force-wielder?
No, they’ve just been practicing. It’s goofy to show off after a victory by performing such a minor stunt, but it really provides some character to your pilot. Paired with legendary gear, it’ll be two very conflicting messages you’re sending to the opponents.
3 Baby Yoda (Grogu) For Dashboard
The Mandalorian may have lost Grogu (also known as ‘baby Yoda’) to Luke Skywalker’s training – something the cast didn’t even know at first, to avoid a leak – but you don’t have to. Hold on to Grogu’s memory with this adorable toy for your dashboard in Star Wars: Squadrons.
Of course, he isn’t labeled with the name “Grogu” (or even a species, since Yoda’s species’ name is unknown to this day) since the game tries to stick to canon and only reveal information that the pilot would actually know. As a result, it’s simply entitled “Mysterious Creature.”
2 Medal Of The Emperor’s Fist For Dashboard
The Medal of the Emperor’s Fist is an epic look for any Imperial pilot’s dashboard. It’s a very unique design for a medal, but at least it’s named appropriately. Star Wars: Squadrons tells you that these medals are rare and unique, only provided to pilots who have “enforced peace” in the “most chaotic” parts of space.
It’s quite an honor to display, permitting you can handle Palpatine constantly waving his fist at you menacingly. Perhaps it would simply motivate you to push onwards!
1 Life Day Orb Hanging Item
The Life Day Orb hanging cosmetic item was added in December 2020, as part of the game’s holiday celebrations. Life Day is infamous for appearing in the Star Wars Holiday Special, a seldom-seen film produced between the second and third Star Wars movies. It was so bad that George Lucas has been quoted saying that he would gather them up and destroy them with a bat, if he could.
In the lore, a Life Day Orb is a glassy sort of ball with stars and glittering lights inside (which represent the afterlife). Whether you’ve seen the special and want to brag about it or haven’t seen it and what to piss off people who have, the Life Day Orb is the hanging ornament for you.
