EA revealed new gameplay and story for Star Wars: Squadrons at Gamescom 2020, featuring TIE fighters and X-Wings in dogfighting action.
The Gamescom video features elements of the game’s story. The Empire’s Titan Squadron is tasked with taking out Project Starhawk, and protecting an escaping spy. Things go sideways when Republic cruisers show up, and that’s where the action ends - with the player’s TIE Fighter turning to take on the approaching X-Wings while the spy gets out.
Each mission looks like an authentic dogfighting experience, with a variety of objectives. The single-player campaign also looks to include captivating NPCs that the player can interact with between scenarios.
Rumored for months, Star Wars: Squadrons was finally revealed to the world on June 15, with an expected release date of October 2. Set just after Return Of The Jedi, players take on the roles of pilots for the New Republic’s Vanguard Squadron or the crumbling Empire’s Titan Squadron, piloting classic ships like the X-Wing, TIE Fighter, Y-Wing, TIE Interceptor, and others in team-based multiplayer battles, which consist of either straight-up dogfights or objective-based scenarios.
EA also promises the game will not feature any microtransactions, though your pilot and vehicle will be plenty customizable.
In addition to the trailer above, EA Motive has released the fourth Pilot Briefing, with commentary on the game’s story by writer Joanna Berry.

The game is in development at Montreal’s EA Motive, which also worked on Star Wars: Battlefront 2. It is coming to PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on October 2 and, most exciting, will feature cross-play between all three systems. The game will also be playable through backwards compatibility on the next-gen Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles.
