When the world found out about the existence of Star Wars: Squadrons through a Microsoft Store leak, EA went ahead and made things official. Previously known as Star Wars: Project Maverick, fans only had an art piece and a few rumors to go off of. Now, we know that the new game is being developed by EA Motive and taking on the flight sim genre, set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
Now, at long last, the wait is finally over. EA has released the upcoming title’s very first reveal trailer – and even without gameplay quite yet – it looks amazing.
And with that, another promising Star Wars entry is officially upon us. Star Wars: Squadrons is set for an October 2, 2020 release date. It will feature a dedicated singleplayer campaign, multiple multiplayer modes, and no microtransactions – huzzah! Although Series X and PS5 platforms aren’t confirmed yet, we do know that the entry is slated for PC, Xbox One, and PS4 and will feature crossplay.
The reveal trailer showed off some interesting elements. Firstly, it looks like we can expect to play as pilots from both The Resistance and The Empire. The trailer focused the dichotomy between the two factions, and therefore, players will likely be given the option to fight for either. Some were disappointed that we didn’t see any gameplay, but that will be coming soon on June 18 during EA Play 2020. However, some of the cinematic used “game engine footage” according to a subtitle – and it’s lookin’ good. A 5-person squadron for both factions will be featured, each with a diverse cast of pilots.
Witnessing the trailer’s live premiere on YouTube, tens of thousands of fans were going wild. Even hours before its release, users were flooding the chat with hype, mainly with the simple word “gonk” – a reference to the lovable GNK power droid. Throughout the premiere, that excitement didn’t die away. When fans say “JUST TAKE MY MONEY” to EA, you know the trailer was a success.
Although Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order wasn’t for everyone, it stood head-and-shoulders above many previous, scuffed attempts at doing the franchise justice. It was a solid, polished entry – even if we’ve certainly seen more interesting heroes than Cal Kestis. With any luck, Star Wars: Squadrons will take up a similar level of quality and further redeem EA in the eyes of fans.
