Many of the villagers in Stardew Valley’s Pelican Town are very eccentric. They all have distinct personalities, interesting relationships, and peculiar ways of navigating life. This mystical and magical valley seems to be full of these characters, many of whom have some strange qualities.
Examine your interactions with these people closely and you’ll start to notice some really weird things. Some of the villagers have odd gift choices, while others say things that don’t really make sense. Here are some of the strangest things about the villagers in Stardew Valley.
10 Kent Mailing Bombs
Once you level up your friendship with certain villagers, they’ll randomly send you gifts in the mail. These are typically nice gestures, like Evelyn sending a batch of cookies or Clint sending his extra leftover metal bars.
However, get your friendship with Kent above zero hearts, you can receive a letter from him on occasion. He’ll say whichever attached item was “collecting dust” and that you might have a use for it. Three out of four of the items he can send you are bombs, though. Why is Kent sending explosives through the mail? Is he secretly the Unabomber?
9 They’re Fine With Weird Gifts
Every item in the game that can be gifted is reacted to differently by each villager, with some universally-liked or disliked gifts. Each villager has their list of preferences, and acting within them will level your friendship with them accordingly.
What’s strange is that many gifts would be really weird to give someone in real life, but seem to be fine in Stardew. You can just hand someone a raw egg, uncooked fish, freshly-plucked root vegetables, or opened food. Many of these items, and a ton of other strange gift ideas, are liked or even loved by different villagers.
8 Some Are Seemingly Ageless
One mystery that has long puzzled Stardew players is the ages of the marriage candidates. There are six men and six women available to date and marry, but it’s unclear how old they are. Some seem to be older than others, but it’s just never made explicit.
Harvey is a doctor, implying he’s at least in his mid-to-late 20s, while Sam and Alex resemble high school seniors. Leah has lived on her own with a partner in the big city and has an established art career, implying she’s a bit older than someone like Abigail, who still lives with her parents and is seemingly around Sam’s age. A Secret Note implies that Elliott, Shane, and Harvey are the oldest villagers. But by how much?
7 Marnie and Lewis
It’s no secret to the player that there is an affaire de coeur happening between Marnie, the local rancher, and Pelican Town’s mayor, Lewis. The player is tasked with finding Lewis’ missing shorts, which are found in Marnie’s room. Plus, they can be caught in the act on occasion.
But, why not just go public with their relationship? Lewis implies that it would look bad as a politician, but, why? Are politicians not allowed to date? Being caught in the scandal of the affair would probably be worse than just being open about it.
6 Rubbing Things On Their Bodies
Often, villagers will post notices on the front of Pierre’s shop asking for help with something. Many of these requests are for a certain item, and they’ll offer a cash reward. The reasons they’re asking for these items are often very strange, though.
Sometimes, the villager will say they want to rub the item on a sore elbow or sore gums. It is usually comical in nature, though, like Kent wanting to rub an Emerald on his gums, or Leah asking for an Iron Bar to rub on her sore tooth. These people really need to see a dentist.
5 Abigail Eats Rocks
Speaking of people who probably need to see a dentist, there’s Abigail, who apparently likes to eat gems. This is a long-running joke in the Stardew community, and rightfully so.
Abigail will say her stock response, “How’d you know I was hungry? This looks delicious!” when you give her a “liked’ gift. This is apparently because most of her “liked” gifts are food. However, one of the things she likes is Quartz, so she’ll still say the line. This fan-favorite joke is even known by the developer, who left it in for comedy purposes.
4 Litter in the Mines
There are a few different “trash” items that can be reeled in when fishing, including Driftwood, Broken CDs, and Joja Cola. This all makes sense, as waterways are often littered with human refuse, unfortunately.
What makes this weird in Stardew is that these items can be fished up in the underground lakes in the town’s mines. Who is discarding their broken CDs and glasses, or even a full can of soda, in the lava pool a hundred floors underground? It takes some hard work to get down there for the player. Who is using it as a garbage can?
3 Clint and Emily
Clint, the local blacksmith, has a weird crush on one of the marriage candidates — Emily. It comes up often, usually during heart events. His desire for her can sometimes come off as a little creepy to some.
What really makes it weird though, is that Clint will still express his feelings for Emily to the player if they marry her. Leave my wife alone, man! Or, he should at least keep those feelings to himself. It’s a little uncomfortable when he attends your wedding and still makes these remarks.
2 Trespassing
If you reach 2 a.m. without being in your house, you’ll pass out on the spot and wake up at home the next morning. You’ll typically receive a letter in the mail stating that someone found you unconscious, like a Joja representative or Marlon.
This gets weird when you pass out in one of your farm buildings and then receive a letter from Marlon saying he found you on his “3 a.m. sweep.” Why is he searching the player’s sheds? Or, Linus can find you, stating that someone was rooting through your pockets. If you pass out inside his tent, he’ll still say it. It was obviously him!
1 Where Do They Bathe?
You might notice that nobody in Stardew Valley has a bathroom, a toilet, a shower, or anything of the sort. This is in-line with many video games and movies, of course, but there is a shower in the spa building at the top of town. Where do these people bathe, or use the washroom?
One could argue that they all use the spa facilities, but the only people typically seen there are Alex, who works out and then heads straight home, and Linus, who just hangs out in the front. It seems that Alex, Penny, and Abigail have lockers, but they’re not really seen here outside of Penny’s 10-heart event.
