The various bachelors and bachelorettes of Stardew Valley are full of surprises for the player to discover. They’re designed that way — it’s all the more engaging to slowly learn about the NPC you’re trying to woo! However, in cases like Sebastian’s, just tracking him down can be a bother, and marrying him can be a real effort.
Sebastian is the son of Robin, the local carpenter. He’s an introverted young man that spends most of his time in his room — so, until the farmer works up enough friendship with him to enter there, they’ll have to track him down on his brief trips out at night, or to the kitchen to fuel up. These 10 details are the kinds of things players might have missed if they didn’t bother to put the time into finding him.
10 A Subtle Stoner
A few small details in the game hint that Sebastian smokes marijuana in his free time. One occasion is when the farmer talks to Robin, and she reveals that the ashtray in his room “smelled really weird.” He’s also seen smoking by the railroad, though there’s no particular indication that it’s anything other than an average cigarette.
The other major clue comes if the player marries Sebastian; like every spouse, he adds his own room filled with his hobbies on the right side of the house. One of the accessories on his shelves is clearly a bong (although it has been updated to look more like a vase).
9 Flounder and Sebastian
Giving villagers gifts is a crucial part of the player’s experience in Stardew Valley. After a while, you get a feeling for which gifts are generally hated, and which are generally enjoyed. Most people, with a few exceptions, don’t like getting raw fish as a present.
For example, giving a Flounder to any NPC will result in a neutral to hate level reaction - except, that is, for Sebastian. He’s the only NPC to like receiving a Flounder. It’s a subtle but clever reference to The Little Mermaid characters, Sebastian and Flounder.
8 He Loves His Mother’s Cooking
Sebastian likes receiving pumpkins as presents, but he loves getting a bowl of Pumpkin Soup. This recipe is simple to make, only calling for a pumpkin and milk (if only it were that easy in real life…).
One of his dialogue lines reveals that it’s a dish his mother makes each autumn, and the player actually receives the recipe from Robin when they’ve earned seven hearts with her. Despite Sebastian’s tough exterior and the fights he picks with his family, it’s sweet to see that he genuinely loves his mother’s cooking.
7 Fans Theorize That He’s Friends With Linus
Linus is an elderly gentleman who lives in a tent in the mountains. At first, he gives the impression of a homeless man — but eventually makes it clear that he chooses to live the way he does. Eventually, the player can even try to build him a house and he’ll turn the offer down.
Linus and Sebastian might have a significant age gap, but they’re both loners who choose unique lifestyles (which not everyone understands). They also are both spotted wandering around the mountains and the railroad, so it’s not unreasonable to assume they’ve bumped into each other and formed a quiet kind of friendship.
6 He Changes His Mind About The City
When Sebastian talks to the player, he may tell them that he’d drive to the city if gas weren’t so expensive. Small details make it clear that he yearns to escape his life in the Valley and flee to the big city. However, if the player marries him, they discover that he’s changed his mind.
He admits that the older he gets, the less he’s drawn to the city. He feels like it’s too busy for him as a loner, and that his previous fascination was just a “romantic fantasy.” In small ways such as this, players get to watch the NPCs grow up over their years in the Valley.
5 Fans Estimate That He’s 5'8"
Personal details about the villagers in Stardew Valley are abundant, since the game makes their interests, birthdays, and more a critical part of gift-giving. Their height is one of the few things left up to the player’s imagination.
One Redditor decided to foil the creator’s plans by establishing how tall or short each character is using their pixel measurements. By this method, Sebastian is estimated to stand at around 5'8" (1.72 meters). This height is shorter than the average American man (5'9", or 1.75 meters), but only barely.
4 He Has A Crush On Abigail
To learn all the details of Sebastian’s crush on Abigail, a player would need to marry several different bachelor(ette)s. The first little hint, however, is that Abigail dances with Sebastian at Pelican Town’s Flower Dance. Plus, Sam, a member of Sebastian’s band, may mention off-handedly that Sebastian really wanted Abigail to be their drummer “for some reason.”
Should the player marry Maru, Sebastian’s half-sister, she’ll comment that she wishes Sebastian would just ask Abigail out. Or, if they marry Sam, he may ask the player if they think Sebastian and Abigail “will ever hook up.” And, if the player marries Abigail, Sebastian’s dialogue about it can come off a little deflated.
3 The Harvest Moon Cameo
In Sebastian’s room, there are lots of little details to explore. On his wall, fans have noticed that the character depicted in one poster looks an awful lot like a Harvest Moon protagonist. It’s hard to tell since it’s a pretty generic image, but the similarities are close enough to call it.
Amusingly, Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon are often compared to one another since they’re both farm simulators (though their fans couldn’t feel more adamantly about their differences).
2 He Likes Animals Because He Can’t Connect With Other People
Sebastian doesn’t make it easy to earn friendship points with him. He’s often in his bedroom (which players can’t enter until they’ve earned said friendship points), and pretty much only leaves at night to smoke or grab food.
One might criticize him for complaining about other people when he makes it so difficult for them, but as the player talks to him more, they learn he acts this way because he always felt uncomfortable with other people — fitting in didn’t come naturally to him. Animals (like the frogs he befriends) are much easier to understand.
1 Fans Theorize That He’s A Natural Ginger
Sebastian’s father isn’t known (though players have lots of guesses, including the Wizard and Linus). His mother, Robin, couldn’t seem more different than her son, including but not limited to their hair.
Some players theorize that Sebastian is actually ginger, and just dyes his hair to more closely match his brooding personality. He has plenty of spare time alone in his bedroom, so it’s definitely possible. One mod for Stardew Valley actually changes his sprite and portrait to be redheaded!
