Though it may seem simple on the surface, Stardew Valley’s 16-bit exterior hides a level of complexity that rivals any other title on the market. One of the most prominent features is an arcade mini-game that masquerading as a fishing mechanic, providing more entertainment than simply staring at a bobber.

There are over 80 fish a player can catch in Stardew Valley, ranging across the spectrum in rarity, value and usefulness. With so many exciting options, it would be easy to overlook the humble Bream, one of the more common varieties of scaly creature.

But Bream can be helpful to farm cash, experience, or as quest items. Here’s where to find Bream, and how to catch them.

Where to Find Bream

Bream can be found in the river in Pelican Town or Cindersnap Forest. The exact locations where they can be caught are marked with red circles on the map below.

Bream are not locked to any particular season, but they are nocturnal. Players can catch Bream from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. in-game time, and they will not be available outside that window. Any fishing rod, from the Bamboo Pole to the Iridium Rod, would be adequate to use, as the Bream tend to be pretty docile when being caught.

Bates like the Spinner or Dressed Spinner, which increase bite-rate, or the Cork Bobber or Barbed Hook, which add boons to the Fishing Bar, could also be useful to increase the catch rate.

What Bream are Used For

Like any food item, Bream can be used to restore energy or health, with the restoration values increasing with the size and rank of the fish. Bream are also an easy way to farm fishing experience, given the fact that they’re and easy, and common, catch.

Like any fish, Bream can be sold to different vendors for various prices, depending on quality. Here’s how much each type of Bream is worth.

Base Price

  • Normal- 45g Silver- 56g Gold- 67g Iridium- 90g

Choosing the Fisher profession will allow a player to sell each quality of Bream for 25% over the base price, so a Normal quality Bream would award 56g instead of 45g. In similar fashion, leveling up to an Angler, which can be achieved at Level 10 after choosing the Fisher profession, will bump that bonus up to 50%.

Bream is also used in a few different crafting recipes.

  • Baked Fish: Combine Bream with one Sunfish and one Wheat Flour Maki Roll: Combine Bream with one Seaweed and one Rice Quality Fertilizer: Combine one Bream with two Sap Sashimi: Just need one Brim

There are a couple of quests that could request Bream, including an Item Delivery quest from the “Help Wanted” board, which trades one Bream for 135g and 150 Friendship points. Two Bream may also be requested by Dorado, Lingcod, or Pike in a quest to expand the Fish Pond from 3 slots to 5. Bream placed in the Fish Pond can produce Roe, a valuable item that can reward more gold if aged.
