Steam has finally added LGBTQ+ as an official game tag just in time for Pride.

Let’s say you’re tired of playing the usual assortment of heteronormative protagonists in games and you’re ready to walk on the wild side. You’re ready to dive into the rich and deep culture of homosexual gaming, but don’t know where to start.

Previously, Steam didn’t exactly make it easy to find games featuring gay characters. The LGBTQ+ tag did exist, but only as a user tag which didn’t actually help with Steam’s sorting algorithms that make recommendations when you go to the storefront (that’s the page that recommends games based on previously played/owned games in your library).

Your best option before yesterday was to head to the LBGTQ Inclusive Gaming curator to search through their list of hand-picked games, but that could be tiresome and it didn’t exactly get smaller developers’ games into the hands of the needy.

That changed as of June 20th, 2019. Steam now has an official “LGTBQ+” tag in its library, meaning that if you search for this tag you will bring up every game that the developer has tagged LGTBQ+.

For smaller developers, that’s a big deal. Steam uses those tags to make recommendations when someone searches for a new game. If you’re a queer gamer and you’re into LGBTQ+ games, now Steam will make recommendations for such games without all the endless searching.

A report from Kotaku reveals that one developer in particular, Yitz, was instrumental in getting the LGBTQ+ tag added to Steam. He’s an indie developer who made the Undertale-like Nepenthe and will soon release To The Dark Tower, a visual poem game about death. Which sounds very artistic.

Since To The Dark Tower contains a poem about a gay man in Medieval Europe, Yitz wanted to add something to describe the game as pertaining to queer culture. Sadly, Steam didn’t have a tag to denote such a category, so Yitz started a conversation with Valve that ultimately resulted in the LGBTQ+ tag.

You can get the full story over on Kotaku. Suffice to say, this tag could revolutionize queer gaming as we know it.
