The Waylanders, an upcoming RPG set in the Celtic and Medieval ages, has launched on Steam in Early Access, which is expected to last until late 2020 or early 2021. Until June 23rd, the game will have an Early Access promotional discount of 10% off the price.

The Waylanders Early Access contains about 12 hours of the planned 40-hour campaign. The full game at launch will have over eight world locations across more than 40 maps to explore. The developers Gato Salvaje Studio (based in A Coruña, Spain) will be releasing a roadmap later this month that will detail The Waylanders gameplay changes and updates leading up to the release date.

“The Waylanders was a dream game for the studio and the people that work on it. This has many stories of Galician culture that we’ve grown up with,” said Studio Creative Director Sergio Prieto in the Early Access press release. “Now, we want to share this Early Access version of The Waylanders with players and make them part of development. We really want this game to grow with RPG fans so they are a part of our dream too.”

According to the Steam Early Access page, The Waylanders currently has about 25% of the story completed, with more being added and polished during Early Access and in future updates. The combat system is wholly playable, and will also be receiving regular updates to mechanics, skills, balancing, and more.

Gato Salvaje Studio will be using the Early Access period in large part to gather feedback from its player base, as is the usual. The game will of course have more than a few limitations during this time, including voices and dialogue that have yet to be added, and the usual bugs and crashes. By bringing in their community during the Early Access period, Gato Salvaje Studio hopes to learn of and correct those errors as quickly as possible.

In The Waylanders, players control an adventuring party that is able to travel between the Celtic and Medieval eras. The once-peaceful realm has become corrupted by a magical force, and has broken up into factions all warring for control of the kingdom’s throne. Players will get to choose from a selection of companions to add to your party in hopes of bringing an end to the evils that inhabit the realm.

It should also be noted that a number of iconic video game luminaries are involved in the making of The Waylanders. Emily Grace Buck (Batman: The Enemy Within, Batman: The Telltale Series) is the Lead Writer, and is also currently Gato Salvaje Studio’s Narrative Director. Her writing teammate is none other than Chris Avellone (Planescape: Torment, Fallout). And they are both being supported by consultant Mike Laidlaw (Half-Life, Dragon Age). Additionally, Emmy Award-winning Inon Zur (Dragon Age, Fallout 3, Prince of Persia) is handling the game’s musical score.
