Titanfall 2 is the latest EA game to make its way to Steam, leading to a major spike in the player base and highly active multiplayer servers.
EA has slowly been bringing their back catalog of games over the Steam over the last month. Until now, practically all of their games have been exclusive to their in-house game client Origin. This week, Respawn’s highly-acclaimed shooter Titanfall 2 made it’s way over to Steam, causing a surge of players and renewed interest in the game.
According to Steamdb, the game has climbed to nearly 7,000 concurrent players in the two days since it was added to the Steam client. The number only includes players using Steam, and not those who already owned the game on Origin who has come back to play with their friends or otherwise enjoy the newly expanded player base.
Titanfall 2 suffered an unusually cruel fate when it launched in October 2016. Sandwiched between Call of Duty: Infinite War, and EA’s other major shooter franchise, Battlefield 1, the game never really got the chance to find an audience during its release window.
Years later, Titanfall 2 has become something of a cult classic with a small, but dedicated fanbase. Last year, Respawn launched their battle royale game Apex Legends which is set in the Titanfall universe and has, fortunately, found a lot of mainstream success. The launch of Apex Legends brought a lot of players back to Titanfall 2 when it first released last February.
Similarly, Titanfall 2 was one of the free PlayStation+ games last December, which understandably brought a lot of console players to the game and reignited the fan-driven push for Titanfall 3. In an interview with IGN this past May, Respawn head Vince Zampella confessed that, while the studio would like to pursue another sequel some day, a third Titanfall game is not currently in development.
Hopefully, the new surge of players on Steam will continue to grow over the coming days and weeks as new players discover the game and returning players give it another chance. With enough interest and support from players, anything can come back from the dead, even Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
The difference being, of course, Titanfall 2 is already very good.
