Steven Universe: Unleash The Light will finally be releasing on Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam) on February 19. That’s less than a week away! Thanks Gematsu for the heads up.
This adaptation of the popular animated show was previously an Apple Arcade exclusive in November 2019, but after more than a year, it has finally made a jump to consoles and PC.
The Crystal Gems are back in this turn-based RPG developed by Grumpyface Studios. You’ll be able to play as seven characters that include: Steven, Garnet, Pearl, Amethyst, Lapis Lazuli, Bismuth, and Peridot.
As a follow up to Attack The Light and Save The Light, this entry follows Steven and the gang after finishing the new rules for Era 3. Now, they must retrieve the Light Prisms from Pryope and Demantoid to save the day. All of the original voice actors have reprised their roles for the game, and what makes it even better is that Unleash the Light has an original Steven Universe story co-written by the series’ creator Rebecca Sugar. Two new Gems were also added to the game, providing more antagonists for the Crystal Gems to fight in the canon.
When the game originally released on Apple Arcade, it received quite a bit of praise. Pocket Gamer gave it an amazing five out of five stars, crediting its “interesting story, challenging battles, and easy-to-solve puzzles [that] will keep newcomers hooked to the game.”
This “Light” trilogy of games isn’t their only appearance in the medium. The Crystal Gems also appeared in the fighting game Brawlhalla as skins. You can battle it out as Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl, or Stevonnie against the likes of the WWE’s Undertaker, Rayman, and even Hellboy. It’s pretty much a pop-culture version of Super Smash Bros. It might be a good time to get into the game too, as Ubisoft raised the esports prize pool to $1 million for 2021.
The Steven Universe series had an emotional sendoff early in 2020, but perhaps Cartoon Network will continue the franchise with interesting spinoffs and games like this. It’s like the studio “driving their van into your heart” over and over again after you think the series is completely finite.
