Stranded Deep takes place in a tropical environment, so you can expect to see fauna and flora typical for this kind of ecosystem, like Pipi Plants or tiny crabs roaming all over the place. After all, when you think about the type of fauna you’ll encounter in the Pacific Ocean, various varieties of fish are the first things to come to mind.

And while you get your fair share of aquatic creatures in this game, you’ll also have to deal with flying creatures! Since these animals will be your primary source of food, you should know which ones are edible and how you can catch them. Here’s everything you need to know about the flying species present in Stranded Deep.

Seagulls

These birds are usually seen flying around the island, especially during the day. However, seagulls can come down to rest on shore rocks. While these creatures are non-hostile towards players, they will flee by flying away if you approach them, making it difficult to hunt the animal down.

The best way to catch these animals is to place a bird snare and wait until one unsuspecting seagull lands on it. Bird snares work similarly to fish traps but have a cheaper crafting recipe. To make them, you’ll need the following materials:

  • x1 Rock x3 Lashing x2 Stick

Since there’s no extra effort required besides crafting the snare, it’s a good idea to place several of them at once so you can stock up on food (just wait around an in-game day before checking the snares to see if they caught something). After trapping a seagull, you can skin it using a refined knife to obtain one small piece of meat.

Bats

If you look up to the sky during the day, you’ll see a seagull or two, but if you do the same thing during the nighttime, chances are you’ll be able to spot a bat — if not several of them flying together. Once killed and skinned, bats provide the player with one small piece of meat, so they’re just as a good food source as smaller fishes like Sardines or the Archerfish.

However, while bats can fly, they’re not birds — so these creatures can’t be caught using a bird snare. Instead, you’ll have to wait until bats come down to rest on Palm Trees. Once the bat is hanging off the tree, use ranged or melee weapons to finish the job. For example, throwing spears at the bat will work very well. Just don’t try to kill a bat while it’s flying since their flying movement is unpredictable and it will be very difficult to kill it this way.
