Strobophagia, a first-person indie survival horror game that takes place during an occult EDM rave, recently launched on Steam. Developed by Green Tile Digital, which is based in Skövde, Sweden, the game began as a student project in 2018.
The first prototype - created in just ten weeks - was eventually developed into a full story by the newly formed game startup. Strobophagia features a psychedelic color scheme and an EDM soundtrack, which the developers describe as, “An oppressive, yet danceable dark-electro soundtrack.”
Players take on the role of one of two monsters, based on Swedish folklore. The monsters must find and kill each other to win, though their methods differ. One must blend in with the intoxicated ravers, while the other will hide in the shadows.
While the goal of the two monsters is the same, their methods of achieving it are vastly different. One of you will blend in with the raving crowd to avoid the gaze of the other player, whose task it is to identify which of the dancers is a murderous monster before it’s too late.
“The team at Green Tile Digital has been eating, sleeping, and breathing rave culture ever since we began work on Strobophagia,” says Ben Clarke, CEO. “We can’t wait for horror and EDM fans to put on a pair of headphones and immerse themselves in the kaleidoscope of horrors we’ve prepared for them. We guarantee the Headless Rave Festival will be a party to die for.”
Strobophagia offers the unique vantage point of being set in a psychedelic rave, which makes spotting your opponent all the more difficult. Green Tile Digital has listed “macabre puzzles following twisted logic” and an “in-game smartphone mechanic that helps you locate points of interest and consult the numerous attendees for help” as major aspects of the game.
For those unsure of how well EDM and horror combine, they can try out a free demo of Strobophagia on the game’s Steam page, as well as,view the trailer above.
