Do you think your favorite game belongs in a museum? Would you love to see it be played for generations and generations to come? Now, your vision can become a reality. The World Video Game Hall of Fame is now accepting nominations for their 2021 induction.
This year, Minecraft was inducted to the Hall of Fame, along with Bejeweled, Centipede, and King’s Quest. They, along with the titles induced in years before them, will now be on permanent display near the eGameRevolution exhibit of The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York.
The Strong is a historical museum centered on the history and evolution of play throughout human history. This includes historical first and second-hand accounts of games, electronic games, and toys. The museum also offers educational activities and an early childhood education program that leverages the principle of play to facilitate learning.
Criteria For Video Game Hall Of Fame
Any video game can be nominated, whether it’s on console, mobile, PC, arcade, handheld, and so on. However, in order for a game to be considered for The World Video Game Hall of Fame, it has to have a lasting legacy. Without one, the nomination will be forfeit.
Other criteria include:
- Icon-status: The game is widely recognizable Longevity: The game has been played and enjoyed over a long period of time Geographical reach: The game has held the same status as in the criteria above across the globe.
The nominated game doesn’t have to fit into all of the above criteria, but the more of them it fits into, the higher its chances of being inducted to the Hall of Fame.
For example, Halo: Combat Evolved was inducted to the hall of fame because it revolutionized the first-person shooter genre. Centipede was also inducted because it combined the shooter genre with puzzles, and it was one of the first video games to be marketed toward women. Meanwhile, Minecraft was entered into the Hall of Fame because of its strong community and transformation into a pop culture icon over the last decade.
If you have a game in mind that you think fits the criteria for the World Video Game Hall of Fame, now is your chance to nominate it for 2021. Simply fill out this form and may the odds be in your game’s favor!
