Forget about the Snyder Cut! David Ayers, director of the Academy Award-winning film Suicide Squad says the “Ayers Cut” is nearly complete and would be “incredibly cathartic” to release.
“It’s exhausting getting your ass kicked for a film that got the Edward Scissorhands treatment” tweeted Ayers. It’s well documented at this point how the theatrical version of Suicide Squad came to be. Unsatisfied with Ayer’s direction in post, the studio developed an alternate cut of the film. Working with Trailer Park, the company that produced the infamous “Bohemian Rhapsody Trailer,” Warner commissioned and tested a new cut of the film. That cut, along with Ayer’s original cut, were essentially smashed together and became the theatrical release of Suicide Squad.
With all of the fervor around Zach Snyder’s new version of Justice League for HBO Max, fans have understandably been curious of the potential of seeing the Ayer’s Cut of Suicide Squad. David Ayers has been particularly open about his thoughts and feelings on the Suicide Squad Director’s Cut today, telling fans that it would make sense to update the film.
In another tweet, Ayer’s explains that his cut would be easy to complete. Whether this is something Time Warner wants to pursue on HBO Max may depend on the response to the Snyder Cut when it releases sometime next year.
