The Summer Games Done Quick 2020 online-only event schedule has been revealed by the event organizers. The charity speedrun begins on August 16 and will feature retro classics and popular indies.
After the quarantine hit, organizers of the speedrunning event had to promptly make the decision to take the popular congregation of lightning-fast gamers online. The event will run from August 16-23 and will showcase over 140 speedruns; all of the fundraising profits will be donated to the charity Doctors Without Borders. The event will be available to watch live on the Games Done Quick Twitch channel where an overview of the speedrunning activities will be featured.
The full SGDQ2020 schedule has an exciting kick-off on Sunday, starting with an obligatory pre-show that will feature various runners including ThePackle, BertoPlease, and Mike Uyama. The speedrunners will be charging through diverse showstoppers including Streets of Rage 4, Demon’s Souls, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2x and Shovel Knight: King of Cards.
During the start of the week, retro classics including Super Mario Odyssey, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link and Donkey Kong Country 2 will receive a fair amount of button-bashing from the speedy players. Some great horror contenders will also be featured during the mid-week lineup, such as Alone in the Dark, Castlevania 2: Belmont’s Revenge and two Bloodstained titles.
The end of the weeks will mix retro with neo; Super Smash Bros. 64, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen and Horizon Zero Dawn will jostle harmoniously together in an impressively diverse list of classic and popular games. Indie games will also make an appearance throughout the event, with various titles getting the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it treatment. Entries that will be representing the indie corner include ICO, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Hollow Knight, and Baba Is You.
Summer Games Done Quick 2019 managed to raise over $3 million for the same charity and its sister event, Awesome Games Done Quick, raked in a higher $3.13 million to donate to the Prevent Cancer Foundation that took place at the start of the year. The organization has hosted a few one-off marathons to support and celebrate different causes. Japan Relief Done Quick was held in 2011 to support the victims of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan and aided the country by raising $25,000. SGDQ also hosted a speedrun event in 2015 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the God of War franchise.
