What can be said about the Phillips CD-i at this point? The result of a botched CD console collaboration between Nintendo and Phillips, it’s one of the most reviled pieces of gaming hardware to ever release. From the disaster that was the systems duology of Zelda spinoffs to atrocities like Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties, it’s safe to say the thing was a flop.
However, years later, some of these FMV monstrosities would be resurrected, and the hilariously horrible intro animations seen in Hotel Mario and Link: The Faces of Evil would go on to spawn some of the funniest memes of all time.
10 New Super Hotel Mario Bros.
Remakes and remasters have been super popular this generation, and, with rumors of Nintendo bringing back classics like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine for the Switch, some are—hopefully sarcastically—hoping for a remake of the CD-i’s Hotel Mario.
An unholy amalgamation of the CD-i abomination and New Super Mario Bros. for the DS, we’re morbidly curious as to how this thing would turn out. All the fun of a modernized Mario 2D platformer and all the meme potentially of those horribly cringy cutscenes? Sounds like a win-win to us!
9 Steamed Hotels
Eh, Luigi, I hope you’re ready for an unforgettable luncheon! The Mario Hotel intro animation may be a meme goldmine, but it has nothing on the dozens upon dozens of memes The Simpsons series has spawned over the years. One of the most prolific was the Steamed Hams craze which riffed on the season seven episode “22 Short Films About Springfield.”
Mario and Luigi may be known for their voracious appetites for spaghetti, but we think they’ll settle for some mouthwatering steamed clams… uh, steamed hams… It’s an Albany expression.
8 Hotel Mario DDR
Nice of the princess to invite us over to play DDR, eh, Luigi? The image of these two poorly-rendered plumbers strolling through the gates of the Mushroom Kingdom has, for whatever reason, become one of the most celebrated images in the history of gaming… and here they are playing DDR.
Originally a gif of the two walking on the dance pads, it’s an original take on the meme’s formula. However, it’s even funnier when we consider the fact that Mario actually has his own DDR rip off game. Maybe that’s what they’re playing?
7 Hotel Mario Maker 2
Super Mario Maker was one of the few must-play games on Nintendo’s Wii U console, and, when a sequel was released for their followup console in 2019… well, there was even less of a reason to pick up the failed Wii successor.
That said, as great as the Mario Maker games are, we aren’t likely to see Mario Hotel Maker any time soon. However, intuitive players were able to create their own versions of the ill-fated CD-i game in Super Mario Maker, and, quite honestly, these creations are probably way better than the original game.
6 I Chose The Impossible
The Mario Bros. don’t exactly seem like they’d be well-suited for life in BioShock’s Rapture, but 2K did just port the remastered BioShock trilogy to the Switch, so maybe it’s more likely than we’d assume.
The Steam review at the bottom does have a pretty good point, as well. Rapture certainly does have some major plumbing issues, and who better to repair them than this portly pair of plumbers? In fact, Mario and Luigi are also capable of shooting fire and ice from their hands. Hmm, these two franchises really are similar.
5 Moorhsum
Bowser has kidnapped the princess and is keeping her as a permanent guest in one of his seven hotels. Unfortunately for the Mario Bros., it seems like one of those hotels is the infamous Overlook from Stanley Kubrick’s legendary adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining.
Mario and Luigi probably won’t be eating any spaghetti here, but they’ll definitely have their fair share of redrum. Just be sure to keep the door to room 237 closed tight!
4 Inkwell Isle
For those of you wondering if this meme of a crudely drawn Mario and Luigi walking through the Mushroom Kingdom gates will ever get old, the answer is no.
Here, the portly pair have somehow found their way to Cuphead’s Inkwell Isle. It’s oddly fitting, as the animation styles almost mesh if you squint. Plus, these two are no strangers to platforming adventures, so they’ll likely fit in fairly well. Looks like we’ve accidentally sold our souls to the devil, eh, Luigi?
3 Write Your Crush A Note
This looks to have been appropriated from either some strange anime or a weird WikiHow tutorial detailing how to get your middle school crush’s attention. Either way, it’s a strange image, to begin with, and it’s been made all the stranger by way of everyone’s favorite CD-i plumber duo.
it’s odd to think that Bowser would have bothered to leave a note when, as we know from Hotel Mario’s introductory scene, he’s literally hiding a few feet away watching Mario read it. What was the point of that?
2 Hotel Mario Bowsette
Remember a little while ago when everyone on the internet was obsessed with the idea of a female anthropomorphized Bowser? This cursed meme originated from a September 2018 Nintendo Direct which showcased a New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe powerup that fused Toadette with Peach.
Fans immediately took things to the most perverse extremes, drawing endless amounts of goth GF Bowser fan art. It was an odd time, and the fad seems all the stranger when seen through the lens of Hotel Mario’s absolutely horrendous art style. Props to creator r/BlueAizu21 for their commitment to the aesthetic, though.
1 Hotel Mario: The Movie
These days, few remember the utter atrocity that was the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie. A very loose adaptation of the source material, it served as an excellent example of how not to make a movie based on a video game.
Though it fortunately wasn’t based on Hotel Mario, we have to admit that this poster seems to promise a better viewing experience than what we actually got. Mario fans should rejoice, though, as rumors seem to indicate that an animated Mario movie may be scheduled to hit theaters in 2022.
