Someone has made a playable version of Super Mario 64 in 4K and although it looks beautiful, knowing Nintendo, it won’t be around for long.
Re-releasing, remastering, and remaking games has been the order of the day in the gaming industry for the past few years. Nintendo has very much hopped aboard the bandwagon, letting all of its NSO subscribers play a wealth of different NES and SNES games from the past.
To celebrate the 35th anniversary of Nintendo’s favorite mascot Mario, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy will be the next Nintendo games to get the remaster treatment. Although release dates have not yet been announced, the hope is that gamers won’t have to wait long to get their hands on what are three of the little red plumber’s most iconic games.
Since there is no release date, it’s understandable that some players simply can’t wait for Nintendo’s official games to be released. That’s why one very creative gamer, who goes by Unreal, has recreated one of the games themselves. Unreal has created a playable 4K port of Super Mario 64 and it looks absolutely beautiful. You’ll, unfortunately, have to take our word for it on that one as Nintendo appears to have already had the footage removed from YouTube.
There are certain games anyone who played them when they were originally released will remember them fondly. Super Mario 64 will be one of those games for a lot of people. However, when going back to play those games after years away, the graphic quality, or lack of it, can come as quite a shock. Anyone who has gone back and played the original Final Fantasy VII after playing Remake will know exactly how that feels.
The Super Mario 64 4K port might be out there somewhere, but knowing how fast and vigilant Nintendo could be, its existence might well have already been wiped from the internet. Its creator even pleaded for people not to share it in the comment section of the since-removed YouTube video. Their attempts to hide the creation from Nintendo have sadly failed. Guess we’ll just have to wait for Nintendo’s remastered version instead.
