The Smash community may be quite the, well, unique video game fandom, but there’s no denying the sheer quantity of quality Smash Bros. memes on the daily. There’s just so much content within Smash to meme, and character reveals are some of the most popular meme formats.
The Smash community thrives on the thrill and anticipation of Sakurai’s next addition to the absolutely bonkers roster, to a point where Sakurai thought it necessary to bring up fans’ ridiculous requests on Twitter. With the power of imagination and photoshop, and impact font, these are some of best Smash memes out there.
10 Hank Hill
This middle-aged Texan family man may not seem like the best fit for a platformer fighting game, and that’s exactly why Hank Hill is one of the most popular characters to meme for Smash Bros. His signature moves include carpentry, yard work, and of course, propane-based special attacks.
Any good Smash player has a Hank Hill Mii Fighter in their roster, reserved for only the most intense of battles. It’s only a matter of time before Arlen’s finest warrior makes it onto the EVO stage.
9 Super Smash Bros. X Walter
This funky dog speaks a thousand words with a single glance; Walter is possibly the most powerful dog in existence. Even out of similar-looking dogs, Walter is a unique good boy, so why should Isabelle have all the spotlight?
It’s difficult to resist this pure boy, so Nintendo seems to be making a huge marketing leap as everyone will buy this DLC character. We’ve got Nintendogs in our catalog, thus, we shall never falter with Walter.
8 Corr(n)in?
Much like how Marth and Roy garnered many confused players to question their origins, the same was more or less the case with Corrin’s reveal in Smash for Wii U and 3DS. Fire Emblem Fates had not been released yet, so Corrin, er, Corn, used Smash as a sort of marketing tool.
Unhappy and disappointed fan responses from the reveal brought about tons of memes to calm the fires, mainly poking fun at Corrin’s odd name. They ended up being a high-tier character, so going 0-2 to a stalk of corn in bracket only became more common.
7 Reggie Fils-Aimé
The man, the myth, the legend. Former Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Aimé, is the prime example of a corporate businessman who puts the customers and fans before anything else, making him one of the most beloved people in the gaming industry.
After Reggie decided to unleash his true bodily potential in a neck-and-neck duel with top Smash player Hungrybox, Reggie stated that he would later return to, “kick his ass.” His return to Smash wasn’t just in person, however, as he would be fighting alongside Nintendo icons himself in Smash 4’s… well, a Mii Fighter is close enough.
6 Tonight’s Biggest Loser
Smash is a little lacking in the comedy department, with only a few characters like Wario and Hero bringing the laughs to the table. This is where Sal Vulcano from Impractical Jokers would fit right in, making players die from not only laughter but top-tier, optimal gameplay.
Sal wouldn’t be nearly as much of a meme without his signature photo that the other jokers torture him with, and it would become the greatest character portrait in all of Smash history. He will make YOU tonight’s biggest loser.
5 Pikadorf
Smash Bros. modding has been around for quite some time, and giving different bone structures to characters is simultaneously the most hilarious and terrifying thing possible. The most popular iteration of this is from the Brawl era, where giving Ganondorf’s bone structure to Pikachu’s model creates an absolute monster.
This still stands as one of the most popular character mods for Brawl and Smash 4, and is up there with the other greats like shopping cart Meta Knight and barefoot Kirby.
4 Duolingo
Been slacking off on your language practice? Playing a quick game of Smash instead of studying? Well, Duo never forgets, and he’ll even go so far as to invade the game himself. Much like how Villager was seen as a murderous psychopath upon his reveal in Smash 4, Duo cracks a bit further with every lesson you miss.
Falco gets pretty lonely in the air and Duo will swoop in with his infinite language prowess to dominate the competition. Fighting Hero in a different language? Well, Duo’s got you covered, as long as you pay for a Duolingo subscription, of course.
3 He Had To Do It To ‘Em
Imagine, the character reveal opens up on the screen, everything fades to black until a dim light illuminates the background, and a silhouette can be seen on the horizon. No words, no sounds, only the shadow of a man who must be recognized as immaculate being.
As a fighter, Lucky Luciano has one signature attack, imposing indefinite fear and power unto enemies, not needing anything else to take down his opponents. You know he had to do it to ‘em.
2 Ultra Instinct Shaggy
With the recent reveal of Ultra Instinct Goku in Dragon Ball FighterZ, it only makes sense for Shaggy to unleash his true potential as well. Shaggy has turned into a revered and powerful force within meme culture, he’s just been holding back on all of their mystery adventures.
In Smash for Wii U, Goku mods were anything less than uncommon to put over Ryu, and with the advancements in Ultimate modding, we could likely see Shaggy over another suitable fighter like Terry.
1 Big Smoke
The second you hit start on the next match against Big Smoke, you’ve picked the wrong house, fool. Grand Theft Auto as a series is a huge contender for being some of the more important releases for consoles like the PlayStation 2, and this wildly popular franchise still isn’t seen anywhere in Smash.
Ness would no longer be the only bat-wielding fighters, as Big Smoke would have a powerful lineup of attacks with his perfect batting average. It’s highly unlikely that we’ll never see any kind of representation for this series in Smash for obvious Nintendo reasons, but that makes it all the funnier.
