The latest update to the Smash Remix mod for Super Smash Bros. has made the Mad Piano from Super Mario 64 playable.
The Mad Piano is an enemy from Super Mario 64 that appears in Big Boo’s Haunt. It pretends to be a regular piano until Mario approaches it. The Mad Piano is notorious for being one of the scariest enemies on the N64, as it comes to life, grows a set of fangs, and stomps toward Mario in a rage.
There is a mod for Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64 called Smash Remix, which keeps adding new characters, items, and stages to the game. The most recent update has added new items (Cloaking Device, Poison Mushroom, and Super Mushroom) and the ability for Kirby to use his Copy power on the new characters to the mod in the past. The update also adds the Mad Piano as a playable character, and it can stomp around the battlefield, grabbing foes in its massive jaws. A video of the update in action can be seen on the Smash Remix YouTube channel.
The Mad Piano is a fighter with a lot of range. It can absorb ranged attacks by eating them, spit books out of its mouth, perform powerful leaping & charging attacks, stomp downward into the enemy, and grab foes in its mouth. The bite attack is particularly deadly, as it can be used to carry foes off the stage.
Smash Remix has done some amazing things with the original Super Smash Bros. on N64. It has added characters like Ganondorf, the villainous Bowser, and even the wicked Wario. The bulk of the new content released so far has been retrofied versions of characters who were introduced in later Super Smash Bros. games, so it’s a nice surprise to see a completely new fighter added to the game. The Mad Piano is an inspired choice for Smash Remix, especially as Sakurai added Piranha Plant to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, so there is a precedent for generic Mario enemies making their way into the series.
