A clue to the identity of the next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character may have been revealed by a listing on Nintendo’s own Amiibo website.
The Amiibo line of toys were heavily promoted by the Super Smash Bros. series at the beginning, thanks to every character from Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U being represented as figures. Nintendo heavily pushed the Amiibo line for a while, but support seems to have dried up in recent years, with titles like Luigi’s Mansion 3 not receiving new toys or supporting old ones. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the last bastion of support for the Amiibos, as new figures are still being produced of the fighters in the game.
The official Nintendo website has a page for all Amiibo figures that are compatible with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. As pointed out by Dexerto, a new addition has been made to the website, with a “Coming Soon” entry being placed between Sonic the Hedgehog and Toon Link, suggesting that the next character’s name will be placed between theirs in the alphabet.
We know that the next character coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is from ARMS, yet only two fighters on the roster fit that space in terms of name - Spring Man and Springtron. Spring Man would seem to be the obvious choice, except that he’s already in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as an Assist Trophy. Springtron is just an evil robot version of Spring Man and he might make sense as an Echo Fighter, but not as a full rep.
It would be disappointing to see Spring Man chosen as the rep for ARMS, considering how pretty much every other character on the roster is more interesting than him in terms of visuals, and the fact that he’s already in the game. Min Min, Ninjara, or Twintelle would be far better choices.
There is also the theory that the blank space refers to a character from outside of ARMS. It’s possible the next character announced for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is someone like Sora from Kingdom Hearts, Spyro the Dragon, or even Tails from Sonic the Hedgehog. It’s unclear how long we’ll have to wait to find out more, as COVID-19 has led to delays on the upcoming DLC characters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
