In Death: Unchained only came out last week, yet developer Superbright has already released updates and plans for new content. In Death: Unchained is a virtual reality game for the Oculus Quest gaming system. The title features gameplay centered around rogue-lite bow and arrow battles in a beautifully imagined version of the afterlife.

Your mission is to restore Harmony by fighting your way through Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory against the creatures and departed souls that have infested the afterlife. The player character utilizes crossbows and longbows to battle within three procedurally generated landscapes that offer high replay value. This is no mindless hack-n-slash game, as difficulty and gameplay will adapt to the player’s skill, and you’re encouraged to think strategically to outsmart your foes. As you progress, new magic arrows and enemies are unlocked, further diversifying gameplay. In Death: Unchained is considered rogue-lite, as opposed to rogue-like, because player achievements and modifiers will carry over into your next playthrough after you die.

Developers released the first patch in time for the game’s release on July 23rd that improved the graphics and locomotion. Some of the changes included in the update were improved crossbow appearance and handling and better environmental visuals – like realistic fog and reflective surfaces. Many of these changes are in response to the intitial critical feedback from early reviews of the game. According to a post by Superbright on Reddit, these additions were “a huge undertaking that required deep changes in the Unreal Engine”. In the same announcement, they indicated that more improvements are forthcoming, with an additional update planned for July 30th.

Further changes include upgrades to the Sanctuary and Abyss, new leaderboards, and color reproduction. The improvements don’t stop there though, with a new game mode slated to be announced in August; a Hall of Fame event is coming too, details of which will be released soon. The game and its updates have been positively received, as players have already expressed appreciation for the developers’ openness to feedback. Reviews are overwhelmingly positive, with the virtual reality capabilities stealing the show overall.
