Those of you that have reached the true ending for SUPERHOT: Mind, Control, Delete will likely be grateful for this latest patch. Those of you that haven’t may want to avoid reading this update because of “spoilers.” It’s hardly the end of the world but just be warned.
Once you finish all of the cycles that Mind, Control, Delete has on offer, you’ll be greeted with a rather meta-message that informs you that SUPERHOT needs to reboot the system. You’re then tasked with waiting out this reboot in real-time…which takes eight hours to complete. That’s obviously really bad, but the requirements have been patched down to two and a half hours on PC.
In a post over on Eurogamer, the publication spoke to the game’s co-director Marcin Surma about the decision for this bizarre ending. “The arbitrary amount we shipped with was eight hours, a perfect time to sleep on the game you just finished we thought.” Apparently, the original idea was for a 24-hour countdown, but that was obviously a bit too far.
The main reason for the quick update was that the devs were hearing reports of PCs going into standby mode while waiting out the timer and save files getting corrupted because of it. On console, this isn’t really an issue since you can suspend the system. Coincidentally, the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Mind, Control, Delete have retained the eight-hour countdown.
PC players had been resorting to external tools to skip the timer, which is what prompted SUPERHOT Team to decrease the timer. “We don’t want to punish the players, we want players to feel both the significance of what they themselves achieved during the ending, and to have a moment to be part of this experience more as performing along than just playing,” Surma said.
The hope is that the shorter wait will stop players from “cheating” and get them to reflect on what they just played. With the world being so quick to react and post “hot takes” online, this feels almost like a commentary on how short attention spans have become in the age of information. Then again, co-director Cezary Skorupka doesn’t have any specific message in mind for SUPERHOT.
“We try to leave our games free for interpretation to the players and wouldn’t like to push our own narrative,” Skorupka explained. “It’s much more powerful for someone to filter the game through the lenses of their own experiences. That said, in my view the original Superhot is more about addiction and Mind Control Delete is about greed and over-attachment.”
