It looks like Tencent has a larger role in System Shock 3’s development than we initially believed.
System Shock fans were devastated to learn that OtherSide Entertainment had laid off the team working on System Shock 3 last February. This came after publisher Starbreeze ran into financial troubles and pulled out of the project, leaving indie studio OtherSide without the funds to continue development.
Then things took a turn starting in May. We found out that Tencent purchased the site domains for System Shock 3 and 4, and then received official confirmation from OtherSide that Tencent would be the game’s new publisher.
Now we’re finding out that Tencent might be more than just the publisher for System Shock 3. OtherSide community manager Alyssa Marshall recently tried to clarify Tencent’s involvement on the developer’s forums after fans started expressing trepidation at the giant Chinese conglomerate’s sudden takeover of the franchise.
“We are still involved, but we can’t speak on it much further than that at this point in time,” wrote Marshall. “As we are allowed to make more information public, we will do so.”
Since we still haven’t heard about OtherSide rehiring the team that was previously working on System Shock 3, this likely means that Tencent is at the very least co-developing the game, and might even be leading development.
