Well, Nightdive warned us that System Shock would be coming up for a demo at the end of February, and it looks like the studio has kept its promise. Starting today, you can download a demo version of the System Shock remake from Steam, GOG, or the Epic Games Store, totally free.
For those still catching up, System Shock was originally released way back in 1994. It was one of the first games to go beyond a Doom-style shooter and added RPG elements to its sci-fi horror landscape. An item inventory, damage-types from specific munitions, and critical hit locations all entered the first-person-shooter genre thanks to System Shock–not to mention the idea of a murderous sentient AI.
We got a sneak peek of System Shock’s new cyberspace a few months ago, but now we get to see how the rest of the game performs thanks to both this new demo and a brand new trailer.
To say that the new System Shock is a massive upgrade over 1994 graphics is a bit of an understatement. Sure there are a few nods to the original, such as the overly blocky shape of the pistol, but absolutely everything else about System Shock has been totally reimagined to look good on modern hardware.
You can head over to Steam, GOG, or Epic to download the demo, and also pre-order the game for $44.95. To sweeten the deal, Nightdive is also throwing in a free copy of System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition–the remastered version of 1999’s System Shock 2–when that releases later this year.
Nightdive has partnered with Alienware to host a System Shock giveaway too. Alienware Arena members can enter for a chance at one of 10,000 Steam keys of System Shock. Details on how to sign up are available through this link.
