Mister Donut is taking their Pokémon partnership a step further with location makeovers. This Pokémon Company backed campaign originally began in Japan and is now traveling through the world after a serious success.
Earlier this month, Mister Donut locations in Taiwan began their Pokémon X Mister Donut campaign. The popular fast-food franchise that focuses on breakfast pastries and coffee began selling three specialty Pokémon-themed donuts along with some merchandise. It began with the release of the limited-edition Pokémon-themed donuts at Taiwanese 7-Elevens, with a daily limit of three donuts per person. Next came the Poké packaging, Mister Donut confections were packaged in a special cardboard Pikachu box, while three popular smoothie flavors made a return to the menu in adorable Pokémon cups. Even more, Mister Donut rolled out a set of porcelain Pokémon plates and scratch cards for special offers and deals.
Dialing the Pokémon-mania up another notch, several Taiwanese Mister Donut locations will be receiving a makeover, inside and out. These select locations have been decked out with giant cartoons of each of the Gen I starters, Eevee, and Pikachu. 2D Pokéballs hang from the ceilings along the light fixtures, Eevee and Pikachu greet donut lovers from the window by way of inflated window clings, even the furniture has Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle images smiling up at patrons. The Pokémon X Mister Donut goodies have their own featured pages on the Mister Donut LED menu screens, flashing those special containers and flaunting the adorable design of the Pokéball and Pikachu pastries.
This campaign is combining two of the world’s most favorite things: sweets and Pokémon. Gimmicky partnerships between fast food places and popular titles were something of a fixture in the 90s—like when Hercules sold those commemorative plates through McDonalds, and we all remember the Mulan collaboration thanks to Rick and Morty—so this is the perfect kind of nostalgia. Even people who have never heard of Mister Donut will no doubt be listening up for a Western release for these treats. With Taiwan being the second stop of this campaign, Pokémon fans stateside just might be able to get a piece of this action in the near future.
