A deleted scene from Sonic the Hedgehog not only gives a glimpse of how the movie’s story could have been very different, but also shows off a very early and crude design for Baby Sonic.
Sonic the Hedgehog was released on VOD this week well ahead of schedule due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Not only can Sonic fans now watch the movie at home for $20, but it also includes deleted scenes, one of which can be viewed below. Very mild spoilers lie ahead for those who are yet to see the movie.
The scene shows Sonic’s surrogate parent Longclaw arriving on Earth with a baby version of the blue blur. In the movie, Longclaw is left to fend off echidnas on Sonic’s home planet, presumably dying to save Sonic’s life. It’s not this plot twist that caught our attention, though. It’s the crude/early version of Baby Sonic that Paramount and Sega included in this deleted scene.
As the scene progresses, Baby Sonic’s design eventually catches up with the one that was used in the movie. However, when he first arrives on Earth, he looks like something from a ’90s safety video. It just goes to show that the idea for Longclaw to come to Earth with Sonic was one that was scrapped long before the movie was ever finished.
