So. Red Dead Redemption 2, huh? Needless to say, this one’s all kinds of a big deal. There’s a lot riding on this for Rockstar, and they’d better take care how they handle it. Particularly with controversial matters like DLC. Let’s take a look at how the game’s shaping up, with regards to downloadable content.

So, yes. The upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2 has been long-awaited by the original’s legions of fans. Not to mention the great swathes of new players, who are being drawn in by all the hype surrounding the game. This is, after all, Rockstar’s next huge title.

If you’ve heard of a certain little game named Grand Theft Auto V (the absolute behemoth which was recently revealed to have made more money than any movie ever made), you’ll know why this one’s on so many gamers’ radars, all over the world. Like any major title, it hasn’t had the smoothest path to release, with heavy-duty delays that have made fans feel some kind of way. Now, Rockstar and Take-Two’s thoughts about possible DLC have been revealed, and they’re sure to cause some concern as well.

At a Cowen & Company conference (that’s a fun name to say) in New York this week, Take-Two exec Karl Slatoff spoke about the merits of the DLC system. While Rockstar haven’t confirmed whether they’ll be adding downloadable content to Red Dead Redemption 2, it’s something that both companies have active interest in, and will consider on a game-by-game basis. It certainly isn’t out of the question.

What’s the most important factor here? Well, take a wild guess. That’s right. Dollar, dollar bills, y’all, as Wyclef Jean once said. Slatoff went on to state that the DLC model is “very lucrative for us… it is a very compelling model for consumers because it allows them to continue to engage in the game in a way they are used to engaging with the game.”

Now, this all depends what exactly is meant by that. Are we talking about engaging in the game in the sense of throwing money at it? Downloadable content is quite a fluid term, after all. Rockstar themselves, for instance, have been steadily adding a stream of new content to Grand Theft Auto Online since its launch, all for free. The game’s still generating huge amounts of revenue, though.

As for Red Dead Redemption 2 and possible bonus content down the line, nothing has been confirmed yet. Nothing has been denied either, though, and that could prove telling.
