Take-Two has announced the acquisition of facial animation specialists Dynamixyz, a studio it worked alongside to create Red Dead Redemption 2.
What is quickly becoming a big week for studio acquisitions has continued today via an announcement made by Take-Two Interactive. The video game giant has revealed it has acquired Dynamixyz, a company that specializes in facial animation. Take-Two and Dynamixyz are far from strangers, having worked together on Red Dead Redemption 2 and NBA 2K21 in the past.
Dynamixyz’s resume is an impressive one that extends beyond Take-Two projects alone. Its visual effects were also used in Avengers: Endgame as well as a number of other projects in movies, TV, and gaming. Take-Two can now boast Dynamixyz is its exclusive partner and will presumably be working with them on all of its games moving forward. An exciting prospect for GTA 6, if it ever happens, and also for WWE 2K22’s launch later this year.
“The visionary team at Dynamixyz have a well-earned reputation for providing the widest and smartest range of facial motion capture solutions to the entertainment industry,” said Take-Two EVP Michael Worosz. “We’re thrilled to have them join our team, incorporate their proprietary technologies and creative wonder into our future offerings.” “Having worked with Rockstar Games and 2K, we know firsthand Take-Two’s commitment to creative excellence,” Dynamixyz’s CEO Gaspard Breton added.
As for what Take-Two projects Dyamixyz will be tackling first, nothing was mentioned in the acquisition’s announcement. It might be a little early for that, but it’s probably safe to assume the deal hasn’t just stemmed from the games mentioned above, but also future projects that are yet to be announced. Rockstar and 2K, studios that are focused largely on games that can only benefit from their characters looking more real, will undoubtedly benefit from having exclusive access to specialists in facial analysis technology.
As for this week’s other big acquisition, PlayStation kicked off the week by announcing Housemarque is now a part of its 14-studio strong family. PlayStation Japan also seemed to inadvertently reveal that Bluepoint will be joining it, accidentally tweeting the wrong image when announcing the Housemarque news. PlayStation is yet to comment on whether it actually has acquired Bluepoint as well as Housemarque.
