Although the company eventually hit some snags financially and closed its doors in 2018, a number of Telltale’s best games live on as modern classics, with its take on The Walking Dead and its rendition of Fables through The Wolf Among Us both being huge hits for the company. The team also built a cult-hit in Tales of the Borderlands, which told a separate, narrative-driven side-story based within the Borderlands universe.
It appears the latter could be getting a new lease of life very soon, with Gematsu reporting that PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X version of Tales of the Borderlands were rated by British certification site PEGI last December. Strangely, nothing has been said about a potential remaster since, although ratings usually dictate that a game is on its way sooner rather than later.
Much like with the original release, the game managed to earn itself an 18 rating in the UK, with PEGI citing violence and bad language as the two core pillars of its reasoning. Regardless, it seems 2K and Gearbox could announce the game in the coming weeks, perhaps offering it as a free upgrade to those who already own the game. Although the original Telltale team is no longer together, its games have gotten updated re-releases before, with Telltale’s Batman receiving a remastered bundle at the tail-end of 2019 that packaged together the game and its sequel, The Enemy Within, alongside a new black and white “Shadows Mode.” Meanwhile, each of The Walking Dead’s four seasons as well as its Michonne spin-off were also released together as part of a Definitive Series bundle in 2019.
Tales of the Borderlands originally released in 2014, with the story following Hyperion employee Rhys and con-artist Fiona as the unlikely duo come together in search of one of the franchise’s mysterious vaults. Throughout its 5 episode arc, the pair travel to a series of iconic Borderlands locations, meeting characters such as Mad Moxxi, Brick, Mordecai, Scooter, Athena, and, of course, franchise mascot Claptrap. The story even sees Rhys merge consciousnesses with an AI construct of Borderlands 2 villain Handsome Jack, who serves as one of the spin-offs most crucial characters.
Rhys and Fiona returning for next-gen consoles would no doubt be welcomed by fans of Telltale’s take on the Borderlands world. If it were to do well, it stands to reason that the newly formed Telltale team could take on a sequel to the project as well, bringing the characters back for a second season. The studio is already working on a follow-up to The Wolf Among Us, taking the reigns from the original Telltale team who were working on a sequel prior to being closed down. Only time will tell, but regardless, it seems a Tales of the Borderlands re-release could be on its way very soon.
