Since its inception, Tekken has been a fun and deep fighting game. The fighting mechanics have helped it to carve out its own niche in the crowded fighting genre. The game is also a tournament favorite when it comes to eSports.

However, just being a rewarding fighting game isn’t the only reason why Tekken is popular. Another major reason is the series’ cast of characters. The fighters have been wonderfully diverse, deep and colorful. Everyone has a favorite.

The fighters in Tekken haven’t always felt like they belonged to the franchise, though. Even though the developers have created fighters like King—who is basically a wrestler with a Jaguar head—and Heihachi, they have also created some questionable fighters. Below are some of the weirdest characters can anyone find in Tekken.

10 Prototype Jack

Tekken has had its fair share of Jack robots. However, none stood out as much as Prototype Jack for being weird. Because he’s a prototype, he isn’t as strong, intimidating or durable as the other Jack models. He is also different because he broke away from his original programming.

However, the developers didn’t take this in any fun direction. Other than his love for sunglasses and his misuse of gasoline—which renders him immobile half the time—there isn’t much to distinguish Prototype Jack from a regular drone. He is also built rather shoddily and tends to fall apart.

9 Panda

Panda isn’t a weak fighter. If anything, she’s among the strongest in the series if used well. She acts as Ling Xiaoyu’s bodyguard, after all.

However, her fighting prowess isn’t what the developers were going for. Panda is a lovable animal who’s also Xiaoyu’s pet and best friend. She loves dancing and enjoys taking care of flower beds. She also becomes Kuma’s love interest at some point in the series. The developers clearly intended Panda to be a joke character. In a game where humor tries to be grounded, Panda is definitely beyond that.

8 Dr. Boskonovitch

Dr. Boskonovitch, also known as Doctor B., is a Russian doctor who was kidnapped by Kazuya Mishima and forced to work for him. Doctor B. is mild, well-mannered and doesn’t carry a grudge against anyone except for the Mishima family.

However one looks at him, Doctor B. is a typical lab doctor. Even when he fights, he’s frail, sickly and can’t even finish a combo without falling over in exhaustion. This makes him one of the most unique characters in Tekken, but at the same time, one of the weirdest.

7 Alex

Tekken sometimes gets inspiration for its fighters from random sources. However, few characters are as random as Alex. If his appearance didn’t make it clear, this is a dinosaur. To be more specific, he’s a genetically modified deinonychus who was created by Doctor B. for military use.

Alex’s DNA was spliced with a kangaroo’s. This is supposed to explain why he can fight like Roger—he even wears boxing gloves almost all the time. He is smart, kind and can understand human language. However, he’s also one of the strangest fighters in Tekken.

6 Azazel

As the main villain in Tekken 6, Azazel looks frightening and is absurdly strong. He’s an immortal being whose origin is possibly Ancient Egypt. He is also connected to Jin through the Devil Gene; he might be the source of the Devil Gene itself. That said, Jin still manages to defeat him.

What makes Azazel strange isn’t just his appearance. His abilities are also different to most of the other characters in Tekken. He can summon crystal boulders that he uses to both attack and defend; he has auto-block abilities, and he can fire lasers.

5 Roger

Roger is a boxing kangaroo. He was genetically engineered by Kazuya’s scientists, so he is basically a super-kangaroo. He can run up to 60kph and can jump as high as 23 meters. He is also quite territorial, as he waits for people to stumble into his territory so he can defeat them.

Roger stands out for being weird because, well, he’s a kangaroo that can box. And he’s not the only boxing kangaroo in Tekken. Perhaps because of his popularity, the developers also created Roger Jr. This is basically Roger’s wife with their baby nestled in her pouch.

4 Sebastian

Sebastian is a minor character in Tekken. And, like his appearance shows, he’s a butler. Making his first appearance in Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, Sebastian acts as Lili’s butler. He approves of Lili’s eccentric and violent tendencies. He applauds everything she does and has her back when she makes plans to take down Jin. Even his self-taught fighting moves are inspired by Lili.

Sebastian doesn’t have a lot of depth, other than his fascination and worship of Lili. However, how many fighting games can boast that they have a fighting butler in their roster?

3 Kuma

Kuma literally means “bear”, and that’s what this character is. Actually, there are two Kumas in Tekken: Kuma and Kuma II, Kuma being Kuma II’s father. Both of them acted as bodyguards to Heihachi Mishima. They could also fight using the Heihachi-style Kuma Shinken, which made them extremely intelligent and adaptable. Kuma was also smart enough to learn basic Japanese and even sign language.

However, Kuma was also quite lazy. Whenever he wasn’t fighting, he was probably taking a nap. The two Kumas are strange simply because of being bears that naturally could be as smart as humans.

2 Mokujin

Making his initial appearance in Tekken 3, Mokujin is a wooden training dummy. He has glowing orange eyes, a shoot on his head from which two leaves have sprouted, chains loosely hang from his limbs.

Created over 2,000 years ago, Mokujin became sentient as the God of Fighting awoke. He then entered the King of Iron First Tournament to offer assistance to the martial artists fighting against evil. Mokujin’s appearance is one of the strangest in all fighting games; not just Tekken. He also doesn’t have any fighting moves of his own, so he mimics other fighters.

1 Gon

Gon is perhaps the weirdest character in the history of Tekken. He only shows up in Tekken 3, but he makes a heck of an appearance. He’s a small, quiet yellow dinosaur with a tough hide. He has huge feet, a massive head but a tiny torso with even tinier hands.

Most fighters can’t harm Gon if their moves don’t aim low. He also has fire breath, dash attacks that can deal significant damage, and he can even fart on enemies to deal further damage. Gon is clearly a joke character, and he looks like he’d be more at home in a Super Mario game than in Tekken.
