The development of System Shock 3 keeps getting more and more convoluted. We’ve heard stories of developer Otherside Entertainment being shuttered, clinging onto life, and still developing the long-awaited sequel, but a new ingredient has been thrown into this bubbling stew. According to Video Games Chronicle, Chinese company Tencent Holdings has recently acquired the website for both System Shock 3 and 4.
What this means could be anything, but it does potentially point to the project getting a new investor. The reason behind System Shock 3’s development woes came down to a lack of a publisher. Starbreeze (developers behind The Chronicles of Riddick and Syndicate) were originally funding the development of SHODAN’s return but were hit with financial troubles. This forced them to step away from the game, practically shelving the title in the process and leaving its future in doubt.
It didn’t help when news broke that the team at Otherside -the current developers- was supposedly let go and everyone was moving onto different titles. Then we got the surprise twist of Otherside not being dead and this recent development of Tencent entering the fray. This is almost as hard to follow as a Kingdom Hearts plot.
With Tencent now holding domains for 3 and a potential sequel (which is likely a placeholder to stop fans from making an “announcement”), we could yet see System Shock rise again.
