At long last, the Journey’s End update for Terraria has arrived and adds a mountain of new content for players new and old to check out. The changelog itself spans over 40 pages long with 1,000 of new items to collect, enemies to fight, overhauls to the NPC system, and so much more. After nine long years, this is quite the way for developer Re-Logic to go out before moving on to brand new projects.
The new update for Terraria also has a number of new activities that players can take part in such as the impossible past time of fishing in lava. While it may seem outrageous, not only does Terraria make it possible but it’s also worth doing as the activity can be fairly rewarding, it’s also the only place to catch three specific types of fish. Here’s how to make the most of lava fishing.
Required Equipment
Before players can actually go lava fishing, they’ll need to track down some required equipment first. Not any old fishing hook will work as players will need to obtain either the Hotline Fishing Hook or the Lavaproof Fishing Hook. Any bait from the Underworld will also work in this case.
The Hotline Fishing Hook is obtained in Hardmode from the Angler and is a tier three rarity item. After finishing 25 quests, players have a 1/75 chance of obtaining it. Thankfully, the Lavaproof Fishing Hook is a little easier to come by and doesn’t require hardmode at all. Simply open Obsidian or Hellstone Crates to come across this gear.
What Can Be Caught
Lava fishing is important as it gives players access to three specific types of fish. The Flarefin Koi, Obsidifish, and Obsidian Swordfish. The Flarefin Koi and Obsidifish are required ingredients for a couple of potions: The Inferno Potion and Potion of Return.
Inferno Potion gives players the inferno buff which essentially casts a ring of fire and sets enemies on fire when they come into contact with it. It ultimately lasts for 4 minutes though players can cancel it by right clicking the icon or selecting it from the equipment menu on console. To craft it, players will need bottled water, the Flarefin Koi, 2 Obsidifish, and a Fireblossom.
Potion of Return acts similar to a Recall Potion though it creates a portal that players can use to get back to the original location they warped away from. It’s far easier to craft than an Inferno Potion as it only requires an Obsidifish and Recall Potion.
Finally, the Obsidian Swordfish is actually a hardmode spear. Although it looks like a fish, players can use it as a weapon as it has the second-highest base damage of any spear, has strong knockback, extremely high base critical strike chance, and has a very fast use time. The downside is that it’s very short compared to other hardmode spears.
Besides fish, players also have a chance to find a Bottomless Lava Bucket, Lava Absorbent Sponge, and the Demon Conch. As its name hints, the bottomless lava bucket is a rare drop that allows the player to place lava anywhere in the world and it never runs out like a standard Lava Bucket. The Lava Absorbent Sponge does the opposite and removes placed lava from the game world without storing it. Finally the Demon Conch is similar to a Magic Mirror, though it will teleport players to the center of the Underworld.
Terraria is out now on PC, PS3, Xbox 360, iOS, PS Vita, PS4, Xbox One, 3DS, and Switch.
