For seasoned players of Terraria, one of the best things to come out of the Journey’s End update, released on May 16, 2020, was the introduction of a harder game mode beyond Expert called Master Mode. In this new mode, players can expect a range of new items, armor, accessories, and enemies.

With stronger enemies and tougher consequences, like some debuffs lasting 2.5 times as long and the player losing all coins upon death, this new game mode should not be underestimated.

10 Only Fight Monsters When You Need To

Not only do most enemies now have nearly 50% more health, but they also do roughly 50% more damage.

Starting out with little health, without any defense or ranged weapons, makes the early stages of Master Mode extremely dangerous for the player. That is why you should only fight when you need an enemy’s loot and try to avoid monsters the rest of the time.

9 Always Carry Dirt With You

Dirt is the number one defense against enemies, always keep dirt on you to build barriers between you and the monsters, as this block is the easiest to obtain and rarely needs to be used for anything else.

Don’t waste materials like stone, which can be used for many recipes and house-building and takes longer to mine when you want to take your barrier back down.

8 Avoid Open Spaces

Keep yourself in an enclosed space so that enemies can’t sneak up on you. If you do find yourself having to cross an open space, there is an effective, yet slow method of crossing the cavern.

Simply place dirt blocks ahead of your enclosed space and then mine through to them. This will create an outer barrier of dirt that keeps enemies away.

7 Carry Regenerative Items

A campfire is extremely useful early-game, as it can be carried in your inventory and be easily placed down so that your character can slowly start to regenerate health.

But always make sure to have something with you that can instantly regenerate health, whether that is food or potions.

5 Focus On Using Ranged Weapons

Use a ranged weapon as much as possible to avoid getting hit by enemies. The boomerang is a good early-game item and can be found in chests both above and below ground, and staves can be crafted with ores and gems.

High-level staves, such as the Amber, Ruby, and Diamond staves, and the Minishark gun, which can use any bullet and is considered “insanely fast”,  are the best ranged weapons to use later on.

4 Dig Tunnels For Ore

It might take longer to dig your way to the ores, but creating your own tunnels is the best way to find ores and avoid enemies at the same time. You should also be sure to craft a better pickaxe whenever possible to make mining that much easier.

Mining in open caverns can be more dangerous and rarely worth the amount of time you then have to spend defending against monsters, especially when ores can be found anywhere and you’ll likely have to dig to them anyway.

3 Crafting Good Armor Should Be A Priority

As enemies do a lot more damage, it’s important to have a high armor class when facing them head-on, especially when it comes to facing one of the many bosses. As well as building your defense, you should also look at obtaining armor that gives stat boosts, such as either the Hermes, Flurry, or Sailfish Boots which allow the wearer to reach speeds of up to 40% higher than normal run speed.

2 Fight The Goblin Army For The Goblin Tinkerer NPC

One of the randomly triggered events that can occur in the game, but can also be manually triggered with the Goblin Battle Standard, is the attack of the Goblin Army, which, once defeated, will spawn the Goblin Tinkerer in a random open area in the Cavern layer.

The Tinkerer opens up the Reforge function, providing the ability to randomly change the modifier for weapons and accessories. Although this can be costly, at a third of the original item price, these enhancements are a huge advantage when facing any boss.

1 Make Sure You Are Fully Prepared For A Boss Fight

As this Reddit user demonstrates, it’s important to prepare for the boss fights, not only by obtaining powerful weapons and armor but also by preparing a space to fight within. Heart Statues are powerful, functional statues that, when powered, will produce hearts and they are one of the best sources of health in the game.

They can only spawn 3 hearts within a small area, so it’s best to spread them out across your Boss Arena, and only 10 hearts can be spawned in the world at a time, so try to collect them as you move around the arena and dodge attacks.
