The Yoyo is a unique and fun weapon to use in Terraria 1.4. With the release of the console version of Journey’s End just around the corner, here’s our guide on how to create the best Yoyo build possible.
Yoyos can be tricky to aim on a console, which is why we’d recommend a player waits until Hardmode before trying out a full Yoyo build. Later in the game, there are a lot more options for accessories and high-damage Yoyos that counteract how difficult they are to use. If you’re playing on PC, go ahead and start experimenting whenever you want. Not the Wooden Yoyo, though. That thing sucks.
Updated July 13th by Harry Alston: With the 1.4 update bringing whole new ways to play for console players, we’re updating this Yoyo build guide to include some more specific information about the best Yoyos for each stage of the game, the best armor to complement a Yoyo build, and how to get the most out of your Yoyos to defeat bosses and farm enemies for loot.
Best Yoyos In Terraria 1.4
There are a lot of Yoyos in Terraria, but not all of them are great. The first one you encounter is the Wooden Yoyo. This is basically useless, the poor thing.
Yoyos start to get more interesting when you discover the Artery or Malaise (dependent on which corruption you have in your world) and then later into Hardmode. Here’s a breakdown of the best Yoyos.
Best Early Game Yoyo
The Code 1 Yoyo is considered one of the best early game Yoyos. You can purchase it from the Traveling Merchant for three gold. BEcause you can just buy it outright, you can get very lucky and pick up the Code 1 while it’s very useful at the start of the game.
Best Yoyo To Take Into Hardmode
The Cascade is the most powerful Pre-Hardmode Yoyo in the game. It deals an impressive 27 damage and has a tile reach of just over 15 tiles. Oh, and it will also set your enemies on fire. Neat.
Cascade has a tiny chance (0.25 percent) to drop from enemies in or near the Underworld. This makes it a pretty rare item. Once Hardmode is activated by defeating the Wall of Flesh, the drop is replaced by the Hardmode Yoyo Hel-fire.
The second closest Yoyo in terms of sheer damage is the Valor Yoyo, at 22 base damage. It can be found inside the locked Golden Chests in the Dungeon.
Best Hardmode Yoyos
Now, this is where Yoyos start to get really fun. With the right accessories and armor sets (more on that in a moment), Yoyos can become very powerful weapons in Hardmode Terraria. The first one you should craft is the Chik, which requires only 15 Crystal Shards and 10 Souls of Light. It deals 39 damage and extends 18 tiles.
Later you want to pick up the Hel-Fire, the Amarok, and at the very end of the game, the ultimate Yoyo: Terrarian. Make a stopover with The Eye of Cthulhu (a Yoyo dropped by Mothron) and you will have a consistent Yoyo build throughout Hardmode.
Best Yoyo Build Accessories
In the early game, you want to pick up some simple Yoyo accessories to fill out your Yoyo build. These include:
- White String, crafted from 30 Cobwebs at a loom, which increases your Yoyo range A counterweight, usually sold by the Travelling Merchant for 5 gold, which creates an additional mini-Yoyo Yoyo Glove, sold by the Skeleton Merchant for 50 gold, creates a duplicate Yoyo when hitting an enemy
Lastly, you want to go for the Yoyo Bag. This item is only available in Hardmode, and it basically combines the functionality of all other Yoyo accessories and puts them in one item. It allows the player to use two Yoyos and won’t stack with the Yoyo Glove, basically freeing up some accessory space for other useful items.
Melee Build And Yoyo
Yoyos count as melee weapons in Terraria 1.4, so you want to structure the rest of your build around a strong melee build. In the early game, you should aim for Shadow or Molten Armor, then later transition into the base Hardmode armors, before rounding off your endgame build with a tanky armor like Turtle Armor.

Yoyo Build Tips In Terraria 1.4
Using a Yoyo build is a bit different from the other builds in Terraria. There are some important things to remember.
Firstly, Yoyos deal less damage if a block separates the player and the enemy. If the string is passing through a block, the Yoyo will deal 25% less damage.
Next, Yoyo range is determined by the melee stat speed, so pay attention to that in terms of modifiers on accessories and the Yoyos themselves. You should aim for either Godly or Demonic as the best Yoyo modifiers.
Lastly, Yoyos can be great at taking down large groups of enemies. Place the Yoyo in the center of a group and let it bounce around on its own. You don’t even need to control it.
