When it comes to cutting edge technology in transportation, there’s no doubt many would argue that the electric car manufacturer Tesla Inc. is leading the pack in the automotive industry thanks to its constant innovation in engineering to help the world’s vehicles transition into using sustainable energy. While this is definitely a lofty goal, the company’s co-founder, CEO, and product architect, Elon Musk, definitely believes it can be achieved, and seems to have decided that a little fun can be had in the process.
As seen below in a recent tweet from Musk, the Tesla co-founder has now revealed that some classic Atari games will be added as Easter eggs in the Tesla V9.0 software, with the update slated to roll out about a month down the road. However, the business magnate didn’t offer a definitive list of which throwback titles will be featured in the next software update, which was presumably not publicized so that people can enjoy finding out for themselves.
Although Musk didn’t directly state which Atari games would make the cut for the Tesla V9.0 update, he did hint at the possibility of such old-school titles like Pole Position, Missile Command, and Tempest being in the patch by stating that he’s “hoping to include” them in the software’s release. Interestingly enough, the Tesla CEO also teased the potential for Pole Position to be “linked to [the] actual car steering wheel”. Naturally, though, such a feature would only be capable while drivers and the vehicle remain stationary.
While the majority of consumers certainly won’t be swayed into purchasing a Tesla just because its next software update will include Atari classics to play in the car, it definitely reflects Musk’s personality as a techie and gaming fan. After all, the Tesla co-founder previously expressed a profound adoration for Blizzard Entertainment’s team-based shooter Overwatch, which he called “amazing”. With this being the case, it’s likely we will continue to see nods to gaming culture show up in subsequent software releases for Tesla vehicles.
