Nintendo has revealed that the next Maximus Cup event in Tetris 99 will involve a theme based on Super Mario All-Stars from the Super Nintendo.
Super Mario All-Stars was a compilation of four Super Mario games on Super Nintendo that was originally released in ‘93. It was notable for containing the first official English release of Super Mario Bros. 2, which was localized as The Lost Levels, as Super Mario Bros. 2 was used as the title for another game internationally. Since then, Super Mario All-Stars has also been released on the Wii and the Switch, with the latter version of the game given away for free to Switch Online subscribers.
Nintendo has announced the details of the next Maximus Cup event in Tetris 99, which is set to run from December 3 to December 7. The stage used for the tournament is a new one that is based on Super Mario All-Stars, and it will feature artwork and music from the game. The 99 player boxes around the arena will gradually fill up with K.O. boxes as they are knocked out. A video of the theme in action can be seen on the official Nintendo YouTube channel.
As with the previous events, it will be possible to unlock the Super Mario All-Stars theme by competing in tournaments while the Maximus Cup is running. The player needs to score one hundred points while the event is live and they will earn more by earning a high place in matches. Even players who suck at the game can still win the theme by playing in lots of matches during the event and gradually earning points from the bottom ranks.
It might seem odd to celebrate such an old game in Tetris 99, especially when so many events are used to promote new titles, like the one for Luigi’s Mansion 3 last year. In this case, the event was chosen as part of the Super Mario Bros. 35th anniversary celebrations that are taking place. As such, it wouldn’t surprise us if more Super Mario Bros. events take place in Tetris 99 in the future.
