Grass-types are quite popular among players. They are one of the three starter options, so about one third of the players get one at the beginning of their journey. Grass-Types are not exactly known to be the strongest in defense and offense, but they are skilled in status conditions and with healing themselves.
However, not every trainer picks their team based on their combat efficiency. Some do it for the designs, and Grass-types have some lovely designs based on bugs, plants, and more. Here are the ten best Grass-type designs, ranked.
10 Leavanny
Not all bug-based designs are this cute. Leavanny is both Bug and Grass-type, and it looks like the perfect combination between a bug and a friend. Most generations have their own three-tier evolution Bug-types, and Leavanny is the fully evolved form of the ones introduced in the Black & White games.
Its design appears to be based on several animals such as weaver ants and mantis. It could also be inspired by the idea of motherhood, as its youngest form is Sewaddle, whose design is based on a baby being swaddled.
9 Skiddo
This adorable leafy goat was introduced to fans in the X & Y games. It is the sort of creature that can blend in easily to bushes.
Obviously, its design is based on a goat. As for the specific kind of goat, it looks most similar to a dwarf bharal due to its horns. The fact that its Grass-type could be based on the idea of the Yule goat out of Scandinavian culture.
8 Bulbasaur
This Grass and Poison-Type is not only a starter, but is known to be one of the first Pokémon. In fact, it is number one on the Pokédex.
Bulbasaur’s cute design has a mix of many elements. The design was inspired by frogs, onions, and lily bulbs. It’s ears and fangs are like a cats and its scales and claws are like that of a reptile. That is a lot of different elements combined together, but it works and makes for an excellent design!
7 Whimsicott
Introduced in Black & White, Whimsicott is a Fairy and Grass-type. Much like a Wooloo, its design is loved for its fluff. However, it is not based on a sheep, but a cotton ball! That is why it is part Grass-type.
Part of what inspired Whimsicott could also be the Vegetable Lamb of Tartary, whihc is an old belief that there was a plant that grew sheep.
6 Phantump
Phantump is often discussed among fans due to its eerie Pokédex entry. Apparently, these guys could be the lost souls of children!
It has a great design for a type combination of Grass and Ghost. They are based on “kodama,” which are trees from Japanese folklore that are believed to hold spirits. It may also be based on Dryad folklore.
5 Lilligant
Lilligant is a lovely and feminine Grass-type Pokémon. Obvious to its name, Lillgant’s design appears to be based on lilies. However, its crown and dress is reminiscent to 1700s fashion for high class women. The petals on its lower half are like a ball gown.
4 Decidueye
Sun & Moon introduced some amazing designs, especially when it came to the starters. Decidueye is the fully evolved Grass starter for that generation. It is also a Ghost-type.
Its design is true to Alola, as it is based on a Hawaiian owl spirit. It is based on the pueo owl, which is a common form of Aumakua (ancestral spirit in Hawaiian culture). The fact that is is also an archer might take inspiration from the story of Robin Hood.
3 Leafeon
Eevee and its evolutions are among the best designs out there. Leafeon is no exception. Like the other Eevee evolutions, it resembles both a cat and fox. Though since it is Grass-type, it also bares similarities to plants.
One theory about Leafeon is that it could be based on a Japanese story that domesticated animals that end up living in forests eventually become one with it.
2 Pumpkaboo
Pumpkaboo is yet another Grass and Ghost-type mix on this list. Part of what makes its design so wonderful is that it comes in various sizes. So not every two are the same! They have four sizes in all.
Besides just size, they are based on Jack-o’-Lanterns, pumpkins, and Halloween. Halloween is among many people’s favorite holiday. That might be way Pumpkaboo’s design is so popular.
1 Shaymin
Shaymin is one of the smallest and cutest legendary Pokémon out there. It was introduced in the Diamond & Pearl games.
