Interchangeable, colorful, and removable: the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Cons are perhaps the most unique part about the Nintendo Switch console. Why not pick up a pair that expresses personality? Or don’t and get simple grey ones instead.
Ever since the Nintendo Switch graced the lives of game-playing peoples, Switch personalization has been at the forefront of Nintendo’s marketing. This includes the many Joy-Con colors that the Nintendo store has on offer. They offer a wide range of choices from sleek to bold to limited-edition special varieties.
Joy-cons come in sets of different colors and editions that mean players can make their Switches unique and colorful. Moreover, they can display what games fans love playing with some of the amazing limited edition Joy-Cons. However, it can often be hard to choose from every product, so why not choose from the best.
Updated by Juliet Childers on November 4th, 2020: With Nintendo fans drooling over Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity and a recently released update to the original hardware, Nintendo Joy-Cons now come in even more colors than before. There’s even an option to get custom painted versions instead. But which Joy-Con color combos resonate most with Switch users?
14 Grey
How to describe grey Joy-Cons: sleek, smooth, and cool. This design compliments the screen and allows for a more grown-up color scheme that is perfect to use on a daily commute or during recreational travel.
The grey Joy-Cons are often rather underrated, but they are actually really nice to play with. The low profile allows gamers to focus fully on the game rather than the neon colors of the Joy-Cons. This is a controller that would be perfect for all the horror games that the Nintendo Switch has to offer.
13 Neon Red
Apart from the iconic neon red and neon blue combination, neon red Joy-Cons might be some of the most common ones. Though it misses out on the dual-color contrast, fans get a solid color that pairs well with the basic black Switch and its accessories.
Sporting a bit of a tomato finish, the neon red Joy-Cons feel the same as the others. They have that smooth, but tactile feel, and the buttons stand out well. These make for a solid and easy choice when it comes to Joy-Con colors.
12 Neon Green
Similar to something like Marmite or liver and onions, fans either love or hate this color. After all, it undeniably makes your Switch stand out from the crowd for better or worse. But give neon green a break; it’s not Gak or Slimer green after all.
In reality, choosing a Joy-Con color really depends on what style fans want. If someone wants bright and bold, then this color is perfect. But if someone prefers subtle or classic instead, then maybe skip this one. That’s the beauty of the Joy-Cons: anyone can personalize their Switch with them.
11 Neon Blue
This neon blue might be a little easier on the eyes than the neon green. Though somewhat subtle, the blue has quite a bit of yellow in it. This makes it stand out more than a typical sky blue might. It would make a great addition to any console.
Aside from the controversy surrounding Nintendo’s Joy-Con drift issues, many have been hesitant to buy different controllers. The price generally turns fans off, but Nintendo consistently debuts new color options just to make it that much more difficult not to buy new ones.
10 Neon Yellow
If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary then the neon yellow controllers are perfect for you. They are nowhere near as bright or blinding as the neon green or what you would expect neon yellow to look like. Rather they are subtle, cute, and soft.
Easy on the eyes and most definitely not distracting, you can play some of the most addicting games the Nintendo store has to offer as well as all your favorite games without distractions and with your console looking extremely cute.
9 Mario Red
What would any Nintendo console be without a dedicated Super Mario special edition? Though the Nintendo Switch already had neon red Joy-Cons, the company still created this Mario specific set to honor fans.
It features a deeper, more cherry-like red as opposed to the more tomato-red seen on the earlier Joy-Cons. Not only does it pop more, but it also contrasts better with the black overall and can pair well with many Switch accessories for The Drip™️.
8 Blue & Neon Yellow
Along with the neon blue and neon red combination, this is now a “classic” Joy-Con combo. Though not as high profile as the neon red and neon green, it still adds a wonderful splat of color.
Moreover, fans can purchase another color combination such as the purple and orange that appears later on this list. Then, players can mix and match to their heart’s content. Despite their higher price tag, it is still a unique idea that Nintendo allows fans to customize their Switches with Joy-Con colors.
7 Nintendo Blue & Neon Yellow
Although the neon blue color is lovely, the richness of the electric/navy/indigo blue color matches just perfectly with the more pale neon yellow. It retains the shame sheen that other Joy-Cons have, too, for added pop. There are not many people that opt for this color scheme, so it would make any Switch extra unique.
As previously mentioned, the yellow is subtle so as not to be blindingly neon. It pairs well with this blue titled “Nintendo Blue”. It’s called “Nintendo Blue” in a callback to previous Nintendo products such as the Game Cube, controllers, and Gameboy that came in this distinct color.
6 Neon Purple & Neon Orange
Similarly to the neon yellow Joy-Con color, the neon orange is nowhere near as bright as fans might anticipate. It has a bit more of a macaroni-and-cheese vibe than a Cyberpunk 2077 one. However, the purple is rich and bright, pulling anyone’s eye towards it.
What makes this color scheme so wonderful is how simple but beautiful it is. The orange is subtle and compliments the buttons within it beautifully. Beside it, the purple is a direct contrast yet still works wonderfully. This is another color scheme that isn’t seen much. Gamers who want Joy-Con rarity should consider the neon purple and neon orange Joy-Cons.
5 Neon Pink & Neon Green
It would be wrong if these colors were treated as anything less than brilliant. This watermelon-esque combination is a heavy fan favorite for a few reasons. They are instantly recognizable, bright, cheerful, and fun. But players can still enjoy their favorite RPGs, action, adventure, and multiplayer games without being distracted.
Any gamers looking for some new Joy-Cons who want to mix things up should consider neon pink and neon green. But don’t be surprised if friends get envious.
4 Neon Red & Neon Blue
Although this Joy-Con color combination might be common, this particular combo remains popular for a reason. This color scheme is rightly one of the best and most favored which is why so many don’t opt to change their Joy-Cons. Another mitigating factor might be the cost of them.
The neon red and neon blue combination is usually the most affordable hovering between $60 - $80 USD. Even so, the neon red and neon blue are bright and eye-catching whilst also displaying what has now become the “classic” Nintendo Switch colors.
3 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Many fighting game fans consider the Smash Bros. series to be one of the best in all of fighting game history. The latest entry, Smash Bros. Ultimate did not disappoint with all-new characters like Snake, Richter Belmont, and Ripley.
But the game also received a special edition Switch console and Joy-Con set as seen above. The iconic Smash icon is laid out over the Joy-Cons with tons of characters on the Switch console itself. Though low profile with the grey on grey, it just means that explosive plays will stand out that much more.
2 Pikachu & Eevee Edition
Pokémon is one of the most beloved and long-standing franchises in video game history. Displaying two of the most iconic Generation I Pokémon, Eevee and Pikachu, it is hard not to want it even if you aren’t interested in playing Pokémon Let’s Go.
Even so, the color scheme is a subtle and adorable mixture of colors that perfectly represents Eevee and Pikachu. It is soft and cute whilst also slightly showing off that you can get your hands on the Nintendo Switch Pikachu and Eevee edition.
1 Animal Crossing Edition
Along with the ability to show-off an extremely limited edition Switch variety, the Animal Crossing edition also comes with the most beautiful official Joy-Cons available. They evoke feelings of comfort and relaxation – just like the game.
In fact, the pastel lime and surf blue perfectly complement the game. Pair that with the welcoming Nook family on the console and this Switch becomes more than just a console. It is subtle, smooth, and just beautiful to look at, play with, and show off as players build their islands.
